The Rangers have made their first foray into the undrafted free agency class of 2022, signing defenseman Brandon Scanlin to an entry level contract. Scanlin, out of Nebraska-Omaha, had at least 20 teams interested in him, which isn’t surprising for a 6’4″ defenseman.
6'4 lefty defenseman who plays a physical game and has pretty good hands and a booming shot. Skating is a MAJOR issue, especially when transitioning from standing positions. He has work to do to get to even a pro skating level. There's NHL upside here if that gets fixed. https://t.co/h4wDbcJYLl

Brandon Scanlin is a big boy with a good shot, but here it sounds like he is a bit of a project with his skating. The Rangers do need a skating coach, something we’ve mentioned on Live From The Blue Seats before, so perhaps there is one in the works and we will see major improvements from Scanlin. It’s easy to fix one hole, not multiple holes.
Scanlin adds depth to the Rangers in Hartford in the short term. We likely won’t see him in the NHL, if he gets there, for some time.
