Per Larry Brooks, the Rangers will move on from Brendan Smith.
Have been told that Rangers are moving on from Brendan Smith as depth defenseman.

Smith, who never quite lived up to that four year, $4.2 million contract, was still a useful piece for the Rangers. In the right situation, he put up decent numbers. Specifically, he was fine on the third pair and was a solid depth defenseman. However it was the contract that stood out to most people.
Smith is someone who would have been fine as a 7D, but I’m sure he would want to try to get a top-six role somewhere else. Even if it wasn’t the best run here, he was a consummate professional. He took his AHL demotion in stride, as well as his silly stint as a forward. There are certainly better options as a 7D out there, but there are also far worse options.
