Around the Farm: Lundkvist watch starts as Lulea eliminated

The list of NY Rangers prospects continuing their seasons continues to get shorter. Nils Lundkvist and Lulea have been eliminated, officially beginning Lundkvist watch for the Rangers. It is expected the Rangers will sign Lundkvist to bring him over to NHL for next season. They do have a deadline, although with COVID delays I honestly don’t know when that deadline is. It’s over the summer, which doesn’t give you much to work with, I know.

LaurI Pajuniemi, another guy who is likely coming over when his season ends, had a multi-point night to even his series in Liiga yesterday.

    • 2 goals and a -2 total for the 7 game series … played almost 36 minutes in the 1st game. Still. not what we would have expected from a Salming Award winner — that isn’t meant as a slight against him.

  • Rangers have 45 contracts this year, 43 already for next season. In a pinch they might go up to 47 contracts. Any way you cut it, they have some room to sign more players.

I don’t rate Pajniemi as a future NHLer, but he would be more than serviceable in Hartford.

If the Rangers are looking for more of a defensive balance between the likes of Tarmo/Jones/Skinner; Calle Sjalin *might* be an option on the left, even as you could find a solid CHL no O player to sign on an AHL contract. He doesn’t move the needle, probably would get paid more in Sweden, but weirder things have happened.

    • Do I follow you correctly? You rate Jones below Tarmo and ahead of Skinner and Sjalin? Or you just randomly put them together?

Second question. Can we use these assets to get couple of centers from LA? We do not have much coming up now.

      • Just throwing out names.

My position on Reunanen is set in stone. Just a guy at the AHL level let alone in the NHL. Break glass in case of emergency.

Going off of how they used players at camp, Trouba’s injury would be Tarmo’s shot to be one of the 4 callups for RD, but they didn’t: so that’s all you need to know. My opinion is my opinion(& is the right one), but facts is facts: the organization doesn’t rate him. You’ll never get that on the record, but the writing

Jones is that guy where his D needs to get a lot better and I’m not sold on his O being good enough. I never got an in person look, but the games on tape don’t move the needle and neither do the stats.

I like Skinner’s game, but at the end of the day can he put on enough weight to be an effective defender against men is the question.

As for using these guys as assets, Tarmo might have had value if a team needed a temporary PP1 D on a cheap contract; but it’s now same time, next year.

Jones? He might have value, but if you throw him in the deep end you might destroy that. If I’m Gorts, I would monitor practices and wouldn’t play him until he showed he was dominant against bottom 6 F lines.

Sjalin is just an AHL 2nd pairing guy at best, the question is if they want to use an ELC on him. I’m guessing no even as I like his game.

Addendum: Due to the odd calendars of the leagues, Rangers can call up/send down players at will after April 27 per CBA 13.12(l)iii as long as they can fit them under the cap. So if they’re on the ball, look for a shuttle service for random line experiments.

        • I think Reunanen situation can be compared to Joey Keane. Same for Skinner. We did fine with Keane trade. If we do trade Reunanen and Skinner for couple of LA centers I would not be complaining

          • You’re assuming other teams have either of them rated that high. Keane came in and was really good at the AHL level as a rookie … and what we got in return was guy Carolina didn’t figure to be in their mix (might say the same for DQ).

            I guess anything is possible.

          • Not any different from Carolina trade. LA has 7 of top 10 prospects centers. Surely they do not expect many of them to make the team. They are short on defense. We are opposite with having a lot of defense prospects and not much at center.

Who knows how or who LA values until you start talking with them
