NY Rangers goal breakdown: Rangers allow five straight in loss to Flyers

Henrik Lundqvist and Carter Hart put on a pretty good show through two periods, allowing just a goal a piece and making some pretty solid saves. Then the third period happened, where the Rangers folded like an accordion as Flyers scored four in the third and five in a row for the win.

The win must have felt good for Alain Vigneault, who again relied on a goalie playing well until his offense could blow it open, and Kevin Hayes, who scored twice against his old team. I feel like we should have seen that one coming.

Ivan Provorov turned the puck over at the blue line, which led to a 3-on-2 for the Rangers. Carter Hart stopped Brady Skjei, but then the Flyers forgot to defend, and this was the end result.

It’s hard to see this and not want to scream at the TV. Travis Sanheim had all day to walk to the high slot –which is Mika Zibanejad’s area by the way– and let it rip. Marc Staal backing up doesn’t help either.

Pavel Buchnevich needs to recognize his man is Kevin Hayes here on the back check. He did not, and when James van Riemsdyk dumped the puck Joel Farabee, JVR cut to the net, drawing a defender with him and opening the passing lane to Hayes. The other option is to have D2 pick up Hayes, D1 pick up JVR cutting to the net, and Buch pick up Farabee on the puck. The second option has too much switching though.

Flyers 3, Rangers 1

Jacob Trouba got burned by Sean Couturier on the break here. Hank bailed him out, but the Rangers never recovered and Travis Sanheim had an empty net.

Hayes is still pretty good.

Pretty sure the Rangers just gave up after the Sanheim goal. No one went to Nicolas Aube-Kubel here before the pass, and they just let him tee it up after the pass.

This was pretty even up until the third period, then the Flyers just took over the game and the Rangers folded after the Flyers made it 3-1. Most of that yellow wasn’t there when the third started.

Again this game was pretty solid through two, but that third was just ugly. The Rangers are all over the place here, but worth noting that fourth line was just atrocious.

At least the Rangers get three days off after this one. What a rough way to enter the holiday break.
