NY Rangers Game 17 Open Thread: The vulnerable Lightning

The NY Rangers make their Florida trip, starting in Tampa

Note: I’m on vacation through 11/22, and all of the game threads were written before I left. Lineups are impossible to predict this far in advance, so I’m leaving those out. I’ll do the best I can with the summaries and the crazy predictions.

Boy how the mighty have fallen. But stop me if you’ve heard this before. A team loses in the Stanley Cup Final, then loses in the Conference Final. Now barely hanging on to their playoff hopes, an aging Lightning team is at a crossroads. Sounds like the Rangers once the Senators bounced them in 2017, right? Tampa is following a very similar path.

The Rangers played one of their best games of the season when they defeated the Bolts 4-1 a little over two weeks ago. We’ll see if they can replicate that effort on the road tonight.

Crazy Prediction: No ex-Rangers score tonight.

Use this as your game thread for tonight. Game time is 7:00pm on MSG.

  1. I think the whole team must have the flu … not just Kakko. Guess they never heard of the flu shot … it might help.

  2. dave, the 2017 rangers didn’t have much to rebuild around, whereas you won’t see the “aging” lightning in a hurry to move on from kucherov, stamkos, point, hedman, vasilevsky in the next couple of years.

  3. Mama said there’d be days like these, y’all! LOL! Growing pains baby – we’ll look back at this in a year or two and we’ll be alright! Yea all the pundits projected us to fail to make the playoffs, yea but we ‘ll be good! Games like this blowout are not a surprise for a young up and coming team, almost a given – stay proud.

  4. Guessing lots of sick guys resulting in zero structure on the ice and a nightmare for the goalies. And Tampa feasts on stuff like this. Bigger issue is whether they can come back and play well Saturday.

  5. As painful as this romp is, it’s part of the learning process. This game needs to stick in their memory banks. I know the Tampa coach Cooper ( who I can’t stand) is encouraging his Bolts to pour it on. . Quinn needs to pull a Mike Keenan and make the Rangers next practice one they will not forget. Make them skate until they puke. I know they are the youngest team in the NHL , but this game looked like an elite NHL team vs a very bad AHL team.
