Hot Takes: Mika Zibanejad is a cheat code as Rangers down Senators

Mika Zibanejad scored a hat trick as the NY Rangers dominated the Ottawa Senators

The Rangers made it a 2-0 start to the season, completely dismantling the pretty terrible Ottawa Senators. This game will be known for what Mika Zibanejad did all game, as he scored once at even strength, once on the powerplay, and once shorthanded for the hat trick. Let’s jump to the hot taeks.

  • Uh oh – MSG just spoke about Corsi and shot attempts. Somewhere, someone is angry and telling John Giannone to watch the game nerd.
  • I really dislike how the Rangers give up the blue line on opposing rushes. It’s not good, and is probably the biggest reason behind their defensive woes.
  • Ottawa lost Mika Zibanejad in front on that goal on the powerplay. Then again, the Senators seem to lose a lot of people in all games.
  • What I mean to say here is that Ottawa is bad.
  • Death to the corner camera.
  • Marc Staal was mauling Brady Tkachuk in front and he still managed to get that goal. And of course Tkachuk is on the bench for my fantasy team. Sigh.
  • Alex Georgiev just completely bailed out Staal twice. He just left Connor Brown alone in front and then Erik Brannstrom was denied on the rebound.
  • Pretty sure Zibanejad and Pavel Buchnevich just impregnated half the fan base on that goal.
  • And then Zibanejad with another one, shorthanded. Excuse me while I change my shorts.
  • And now Artemi Panarin gets a goal. That top powerplay unit is a cheat code.
  • Did I mention how bad Ottawa is? Not every game is going to go like this.
  • Brendan Smith has had a good start to the season. He’s on an 82 point pace!
  • I see Lias Andersson is on the third line. Hooray. Kid has earned that role.
  • Zibanejad on pace for 344 points by the way.
  • As good as Andersson has been through two games is as bad as Ryan Strome has been.
  • At some point, as I see Georgiev bail out Brady Skjei, we need to talk about Skjei and that contract. He looked good with Adam Fox tonight, but he’s struggled since he signed that deal. Let’s see how the season plays out though.
  • 2-0 to start the year. 20% of the way to my 9-0-0 prediction to start the season. I wasn’t serious when I made that prediction…or was I?

  1. OMG, Andersson only had 10 min ice time? What is David Quinn doing? He will get killed on BSB.

      1. Is this the way your mother taught you how to speak to a stranger? Tell her she did a great job.

  2. “2-0 to start the year. 20% of the way to my 9-0-0 prediction to start the season. I wasn’t serious when I made that prediction…or was I”<<<<<<<<< If the Rangers win 3 or 4 mores in row I will not be surprised if you start telling everyone you meant it ……..LOL !

  3. I thought Brady had a very good game. He and his partner Fox moved the puck out of their own each very quickly and were on target with their passing. The Bread, Zib Buch trio have great chemistry they are a treat to watch. Georgie was solid the lazer beam shot from Chabot was the only puck that could beat him.

    1. It means nothing until both of these pairings see consistent time with both goalies to have a better idea of why things work the way they do.

My position is that Hank’s preferences aren’t good for him anymore. But until they build a body of evidence, he won’t change.

Give him what he wants for now, go to the non fronting style in November and let the data sort itself.

  4. No sure if I’m really excited about these game recaps… there is basically no information.. just shared feelings. Sorry Dave.. otherwise big fan of the blog!

  5. I suggested Quinn put the kids with Trouba and Skjei last week, please put Lias with Kaapo because Strome is killing the kid. Lias would work well with Kreider and Kaapo, he will bring that grit and toughness to Kreiders straight line speed and Kaapo skills set. He would force the play to the front of the crease and Kaapo to do his thing, man Strome missed passes to the kid all night. Strome just isn’t a top 9 guy.

    1. From what I watched tonight Strome was the Rangers 4th best center tonight. I would really like to see Nams as a pivot between Kaapo and Krieder. He is a good puck distributer and knows where his end of the ice is.

Been saying it for like forever? This has more to do with the forwards than the D men, btw.

Panarin-Zib-Buch, wow, wow, wow. I mean, we have not seen poetry in motion like this since Jagr and Nylander. Just an amazing thing to watch. Oh, and btw, how about that takeaway by Panarin? The Sens’ player never knew what happened or what hit him.

Before the home opener, I turned to my buddies in Section 215 and said “the PP will be LETHAL.” And, LETHAL it is.

Georgie, just wow. Made some big time saves when he needed to.

I didn’t like changing the D pairs but it seemed to work out, but ok, let’s see it against the Caps, or some team like that. Staal was pretty good, but he can’t clear the crease to save his life. Lindgren?

    Tkachuk is a player huh?

Now for the bad. Names and Strome HAVE GOT TO GO. They have done nothing, zippo. Strome is KILLING Kakko. You mean to tell me that Chytil cannot do better? I refuse to believe that.

Stop trying to make Lemieux a thing. He’s not.

And Andersson getting less than 10 minutes is ridiculous. He’s playing well and needs to be the 3C. Like now.

I cannot believe the next game is next Saturday. ugh!!

    LGR!!

    1. Tony

As always, spot on with your post. Andersson was moved up to the third line, but not soon enough for my taste. He, along with Kakko, and Kreider could become the old “Bull Dog Line” of old, that would be fin to watch!!!!!!!!!!

      LGR……………….

      1. I actually would like to see that as well bro. It would be interesting to see Andersson between them, if it’s not Chytil, for now.

Man, you can see Kakko’s skill, but he does need a C to get him the puck. He and Kreider are not getting any help from Strome.

Zib’s and the 1st line’s production is off the charts good, but other lines need to score too, or this will be 2006 all over again (Jagr, Nylander, Straka)

        1. Kreider is very “center” dependent as he doesn’t adroitly stick handle the puck (as Jim Gordon used to say) into the zone. He’s more of a mad rusher to the slot which I love. Kakko can but he needs a competent center too.

As much as I disliked Kevin Hayes’ game he would have perfect between K &K salary cap be damned!

          1. Frank that is exactly right about CK.

Signing Hayes means no Panarin and maybe no Trouba. I like it the way it is now. The Flyers will hate that contract soon.

  8. Please get a 2C going soon. #20 and #24 deserve better!

Zib also had that assist … wow just wow.

  9. In addition to kvelling about Panarin & Zib (& Buch) providing a constant stream of highlights, Trouba is looking like a stud and Fox is going to be special.

  10. As Reen reported in the other thread, Chytil playing wing in Hartford is very disconcerting. What purpose does that serve, not to mention the message to the player?

      1. Whew, good to know. Chytil IS the 2C of the not too distant future (December?) He needs work on defense and things, but it is obvious that he has the offensive skills. It is easy to forget how young he is, we need a little patience.
