I thought 2 years, $3.2M, so in the ballpark.

Sign ADA for $2M per for 2 years.
Sign Lemiuex for $1M per for 2 years.
    Demote Beleskey.
    Buyout Smith.
Trade Names for a 3/4 pick with no retainage.

Results in $1M in cap space left.

Is there a market for Names? And wouldn’t a buyout of Staal make more sense?

Probably get a 3rd or 4th for Names, hopefully no cap retainage.

Rangers love Staal and they will not buy him out. Ridiculous, but true. But yes, that would make sense.

I think $2M is much too high for ADA. He has no leverage and likely can be signed for half that. While he took great strides last year, he is still not a proven NHLer (well maybe a proven third pair but that doesn’t rate a big salary).

Don’t really like the Smith buyout as it saves (almost) nothing next year and has long term downside BUT I agree with your basic sentiment – find a path that does NOT involve a Kreider trade.

Blame Winnipeg……Pionk is not even an NHL player. ADA was our best D man last season

I was being conservative to see what the Rangers would have to do to be cap compliant.

        So instead of $3M for the 2, it’s $2.5M? It’s peanuts.

I’m thinking a buyout or two is coming, but I also think Kreider is a goner. I hope not, but this is going down to the wire and I am of the belief that CK is not backing off of 7 years… and I really can’t blame him. Nor can I blame Gorton.

I’m hearing that the Rangers are trying very hard to keep Kreider.

Maybe a possible compromise? 5 years with a little more cash, say 36 million? 7.2 AAV? Similar to Hayes’ AAV.

I’d sign up for shorter term with slightly larger AAV.

I always thought 5 years for $7M per would do it.

Keeping Kreider is the best move…..just cant pay him to age 36-37

I read Brooks’ articles and it’s clear that he no longer has an in with the team.

I do not believe that Shatty will be bought out. The 2nd year, which Brooks doesn’t even mention, is a brutal cap hit, like $6M in dead cap space. The Rangers would rather retain 50% in a trade then have $6M in dead cap space in 2020-21.

It now appears like the Rangers are going to cave on the Kreider situation and give him something like a 7 x $7 contract. The Hayes and Anders Lee contracts have set the market and if the Rangers want to retain CK, and they absolutely do, then this is the contract that they are going to have to give him.

So, Smith buyout, Names trade, Beleskey demotion, and DeAngelo and Lemiuex signings for one year each at qualifying offers ($1M each) gives the Rangers approx $2M in cap space, $1M if the Rangers need to retain $1M in the Names trade.

The real wildcards are what the Rangers do with Shatty and Strome. The Shatty situation is interesting. I guess it will depend on the trade market and whether the Rangers will be willing to retain up to 50% of his cap hit in the trade.

For Strome, I guess it also depends on the trade market. Does Chytil get the 2C? Does Krav actually play 2C to get him in the top 6?

If nothing else, this has to be one of the most exciting upcoming seasons we have had in a while. And it’s great that it includes so many young players.
