Game Wrap-ups

Dramatic third propels Rangers to the shootout win

Well this was a fun game, wasn’t it? The Rangers controlled the first period, jumping out to a 1-0 lead. It was a totally different story in the second, with the Bruins scoring three unanswered, seemingly demoralizing the Rangers and putting this non-playoff team to rest. But then the third happened, and the Rangers sent the game to overtime on the back of two Pavel Buchnevich assists.

Mika Zibanejad (goal) and Mats Zuccarello (assist) stayed crazy hot. Filip Chytil got his 10th of the season, and Tony DeAngelo added his 10th assist. It’s funny what happens when you play the skill players. And maybe, just maybe, DeAngelo figures out his maturity issues. Optimism!

The overtime was crazy, with ridiculous saves by both Alex Georgiev and Jaro Halak. Give me all the 3-on-3 OT. It’s a gimmick, but it’s a great gimmick. I dislike the shootout, but that was fun to watch last night too!

The outcome wasn’t so good for the tank, but my god that was a fun one to watch.

Rangers 1, Bruins 0

This is a great bird’s eye view of the goal. Mika Zibanejad got the puck deep, then circled out of the zone and crept back in unnoticed to the high slot. Meanwhile Mats Zuccarello got in deep to collect the puck and found Zibanejad coming back in with a great pass.

Bruins 1, Rangers 1

This is a great deflection by Danton Heinen. Tony DeAngelo was mauling him in front and he still got a stick –albeit it looked accidental– on the Matt Grzelcyk shot.

Bruins 2, Rangers 1

Sure, this is great passing and all, but the Blueshirts allowed to cross-ice passes. This is a total defensive failure from all five players on the ice.

Bruins 3, Rangers 1

Patrice Bergeron with the deflection while there are two bodies in front. Georgiev stood no chance.

Bruins 3, Rangers 2

Pavel Buchnevich with the drive to the net, taking Zdeno Chara with him behind. Brandon Carlo overskated the rush, which left Kevin Hayes wide open in front. Buch threw the puck at the net with Jaro Halak out of position, and Hayes was there to poke it in after Jimmy Vesey got the puck to the slot.

Bruins 3, Rangers 3

Just a good case of Filip Chytil being in front for the screen on Buchnevich’s shot and collecting hte rebound. Not the best game for Carlo, as this is now the second man he’s lost this period that led to a goal.

Shot Heatmap

What is going on with the Rangers? This isn’t total domination (they had four more attempts than the Bruins), but it’s still another game where they held the possession advantage. They’ve been good lately!

The post-McLeod era began with a fun game, which is scary because there was no one on the ice to protect those precious Rangers! Skill hockey is fun, let’s keep it going, even if just for a short while.

  • A role reversal from The Kings game. Bad for the tank but that was a great win! ADA is our most dynamic D man. Not sure what these maturity issues are…but let’s hope they get resolved soon. He needs to be in the line up nightly. Glad to see Chytil get rewarded for his hard work. Zibanejad, Zucc and Kreider playing great hockey.
Only 2 penalties last night. And we’ve been keeping that number low the past few games. It’s easier to put your skill players on the ice when you’re not short handed. Disciplined teams get good results…

  • I think Staal should go directly to the penalty box before the game starts to get it over with.

    I hate 8PM games.

Pastarnak is crazy good. So is Bergeron. So is Zib. Chytil is special.

The one thing I will say about the Rangers’ team D, is that while they are still giving up mind numbing and dumb turnovers, they do try to mitigate the damage to make up for those turnovers.

    • True Tony, it is easier to make up for mistakes if the defender has some speed. Actually, I believe that the majority of the turnovers were by the forwards.

  • That was the most fun I’ve had watching a hockey game in a while. Drama, pathos and end to end action during the overtime- I also dislike shootouts as a general rule but this one was fun to watch.

Buchnevich and DeAngelo coming back into the fold after their timeouts and playing good hockey. That is great to see.

    • It was great to see the enthusiasm of Georgiev and the team (for Georgiev) after pulling this one out.

This was certainly one of the most exciting Ranger games I’ve seen in a long time. Playoff like hockey for the last seven minutes and the OT was wild. It is really hard to sit there and watch them make a comeback and root for the feel-good win but know deep down that the best thing for the future is for them to lose.

And we have now officially entered the middling zone once again – talking about how many points the NYR are out of the wild card. And with that comes the “Trade or Not Trade” question and all of the indecision that goes with it.

We all know they are not a playoff team but they are battling and that is also good for the future. I just hope that the atmosphere of last night is as close to the playoffs as they get this year.

  • Coming back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game, and the then go int the overtime was so exciting. In all the years of watching this game, never did I see such effort by two teams during the OT, and that shoot out was just too much. Not great for the dive, but it was worth the price of admission for sure. ADA getting the winner, then chirping it up with the B’s bench, I laughed my butt off. DQ should never sit Tony again, the kid is too damn good for that kind of treatment from this coach!!!!!!!!!

    • The young man played a mighty mature game while doing a fair amount of mouthing off to a reciprocal Boston bench that featured Brad Marchand. It was a performance that pleased Quinn.

“I want him pushing that envelope as far as he can without letting it get in the way of his performance or being a detriment to the team,” the coach said. “Marchand is as good at it in the league as there is. I’d take 100 Marchands”.

I really don’t know how to take this coach, one day saying ADA is immature, then the next saying what he did last night?????????? He is full of crap if you ask me!!!!!!!!

      • Coach Q wants his players to play with controlled intensity, when they don’t, he lets them know and gives them a seat. When they seem to learn the lesson, he does not hold a grudge and puts them back in the lineup. Nothing wrong with teaching young players small lessons. If he favors anyone it is the first line, which deserves all the ice time they can handle.

        • If he favors anyone, look at the former top pair of Staal, and Pionk. Sorry my friend we have to disagree on this……………….

      • He sat ADA because of what they BOTH called a maturity issue. They talked about it man to man, and Tony came back and played his ass off. I’d say that Quinn’s “intervention” worked pretty damn well.

        • A talented player being allowed to play a victory for the coach? Intervening by not allowing him to play. Genius!

        • He tried to teach a point at the expense of the team, poor personnel management!!!!!

You’ll never convince me that the so called immaturity was worth playing Pionk, Smith, Staal, and Mc Quade. This kid who can out skate them all, and has a much better shot, and plays better defense should have to sit to prove a point. It’s a joke…………

          • King Sieveqvist!! King Sieveqvist!!King Sieveqvist!! King Sieveqvist!!King Sieveqvist!! King Sieveqvist!!King Sieveqvist!! King Sieveqvist!!King Sieveqvist!! King Sieveqvist!!King Sieveqvist!! King Sieveqvist!!King Sieveqvist!! King Sieveqvist!! says:

The sad reality is ADA makes Staal better , sad but true. Neither should be a first pairing but we don’t really have anyone for that role. If the Forward chip in like last night and few other games in the past 10-15 there’s a different product on the ice. Lots of time you see the off wing taking off a bit prematurely. I know it’s a percentage play and if you have control they should be going but most times it causes a bit of trouble.

          • Sieve

I never said that ADA is top pair material, but I will say he is the best right defense player we have. He defends better than Shatty, Smith, Pionk, and Mc Quade by a country mile, skates better than them, and has a decent shot. On many other teams he would be maybe top four, but with our current line up, he is the best of a poor crop!!!!

  • I am sorry but I need to beat you over the head over and over until you realize Fast is useless unless he plays on the 4th line. Hays was scoreless until what happened? Yes, Fast was off his line. Buch was pointless until Fast was off his line. I could have done this from the beginning and 95% of the time I would be right. The problem is not the deceived fans who see Fast trying so hard but accomplishing nothing but the coach who keeps putting an anchor on with the skill and expect something to come of it. Keep hating me for being right.

  • Great for Tony D. Liked his battle and chirp on the Rat. I’ll take the Rat anyway. Hope Zucc stays or returns from a rental. Hayes can go for a 1st rounder if someone wants him. No loss of Cody. But they still need to play tuff. Speed and skill are great but you also need grit.

  • Why are the Rangers suddenly a good team? Zbad is actually starting to look like an elite player and he and Zuccarello are playing a lot. 22-23 minutes this game, 25 each last game. The Ranger top line is good and plays a lot. The weaker forwards are not being allowed to do much damage. As for the defense, it really is not that bad as long as Pionk is not in the game. In fact, Staal-DeAngelo is actually starting to look like a real first pair. Not a great one admittedly, but at least credible. It is an interesting about face that ADA looks far better in his own end than does Pionk.

Of course, the ups and downs of this team are also goaltending related. Hank has had both hot and cold streaks and Georgiev has been more up and down on a game by game basis. Despite the three goals, Georgiev was essentially perfect in this one and I was really glad to see him get the win.

The Rangers could actually make the playoffs if they keep Zuccarello and Hayes, keep Pionk out of the lineup, and the goaltending excels, but only the last of the three seems a fair bet. The trades may do a service by getting some of our young prospects away from McCambridge (the Hartford organization is obviously a nightmare).

  • Kind of mixed reaction after last night. Obviously happy that chytil tony d did their thing. But valuable lottery position is being sacraficed. Seeing a lot of OMG how can they break up the top line … When three weeks ago youd be hard pressed to get a third rounder for zucc. I say cash in on it, if anything. At the end of the day they still have the least ROW in the league. Hayes not slowing down, should garner a haul right now esp with wild situation. He’s going for that big bag in july. Credit to him.

    • I want to momentarily put the tank on the side……I hate the Bruins…..Great comeback win…

  • Since the All-Star game this team has controlled the play in every game … there’s hope for these guys yet. Still think we should be keeping Hayes.

ADA should end up as a huge fan favorite, he’s an offensive defenseman that chirps like Marchand and likes the physicality.
