Game 43: Free falling, but at least we don’t play in Brooklyn

The Rangers, losers of 2019 so far, are back home to take on the surprisingly decent Islanders. The Isles were an afterthought after their offseason, but are in the playoff hunt. Robin Lehner has been playing elite level hockey, which has helped the Isles with last year’s league-worst goals against.

The Isles are not without their issues. They need more scoring depth. Their blue line could use an upgrade. But they play low-event hockey and it seems to be working.

The first time these teams met this year, the Isles won a wild one 7-5. The Blueshirts demolished the Isles 5-0 in their most recent visit. Tonight and Saturday are the last times these teams will play this year.

This is crazy playing Buch on the 4th line! At the end of the season we are still going to be saying we are not sure what we have with him. For God sake play him in the top 6 the rest of the way and then we can decide whether to resign him this summer (unless Quinn already knows he wants him moved at the trade deadline)

The coach wants to lose! Example 1 Chris Kreider–Mika Zibanejad–Jesper Fast
    Example 2 Cody McLeod–Boo Nieves-Pavel Buchnevich
Good job coach! I couldn’t have done better if I wanted to lose.

Sam and Joe are seriously pissing me off. They need to move to NBC and preach there nonsense to people who don’t understand hockey.

It almost looked like they knew what they were doing for a minute at the start of the game ?

Best line has been Strome Chytil and Fast

They have been playing good tonite. Is it me or does it seem like ever other puck just bounces off Chytil stick?

I don’t understand the concept of shooting the puck into opposition’s shin pads on the PP. Moving the puck around opens up shooting lanes.

Shooting lanes that many on this team don’t seem ready or desirous of taking advantage.

Claesson best d-man on the ice even though we don’t see him much like ADA and something tells me that’s not DQ’s choice.

Ya but I don’t believe Pionk will ever figure out the whole defence thing.

        Yeah but it’s his first go …. what’s Staal’s , Shitty’s , Smith’s , Mc Quaid’s and Skjei’s excuse ? Well I gotta admit McQuaid is killing Skjei’s gane For sure.

That was a heckuva 3rd period until the boneheaded defense with 90 seconds to go. Ah well. At least Hank is getting better – went from 6 to 5 to 4 goals against in his last 3. Might have to change my name to Sittoosieve…?

SIevesittoo … how dare you! You know thens are fighting words on this board? All good stuff. The thing is I’d rather see Pionk making that little mistake with another young partner instead of Staal! Main thing is at least they showed a heartbeat last night.

ok I’m so frustrated that we lost because its to the Icelanders. That we blew a 5v3, can’t kill on the PK and that last play just pisses me off. It’s time Stahl and Pionk to need a seat. Rather see Smith and Tony D. Can’t be worse! Last night Stahl was especially in slow motion and had may unforced turnovers. The last goal was a basic 2v2. Stahl decided to back in back in and if you watch the replay the Isle was past him way on the wall. instead of Stahl’s stick taking away the low cross ice pass his stick is pointing up ice. He could have attacked but played containment. Pionk next to his guy but no stick on stick or body on body and what WTF pirouette did he execute? They both make a brilliant change at the same time while we of course turn the puck over again and again. Breakaway goal!
Let me be more in control and make these observations and opinion.
Back in Dec when we were ending a good streak there were calls of tanking, who quit on us, and numerous trade ideas. I commented at the time that all those one goal regulation OT/ shootout losses could have been a win by fixing 2 basic problems. Quinn had already stated that he wanted the opponent harassed and not given a free entry. The most glaring problem is the turnovers at blue lines and in the N Zone. You cant back check, harass and play hard against the wind when 2 or 3 forwards go one way and the puck goes the other way. Fix and reduce the turnovers and we can have better entries with support and more shots, provided you hit the net, and more O Zone time which may get you more goals. Did that in the 3rd period last night.
Basic problem #2 if your PK was ranked near the top ten instead of the bottom you would turn maybe 5 0r 6 one goal losses into wins. Improve dramatically in these two areas and we could have more shots and at least 10 or more points.

Last comment, As I stated previously Zucc has not quit. I would not trade CK or Mika. Zucc and Hayes are most expendable due to their situation and can get us a high draft pick or maybe a D that’s better than what we have. I think Pionk has potential and its his first year , leave him. Shatty should stay, he should be on PP1. He gets his shot through and mostly on the net. We all new he came here to move the puck and be offensive. He needs that solid partner which we don’t have. His price was not outrageous. BEAT THE ICELANDERS Sat.

If that was ADA instead of Pionk on the last Islander goal then ADA would be benched for the next 3 games.
