Game 39: Help out the goaltenders a bit, maybe?

The Rangers are back in action tonight, their first game in 2019, against the Penguins. The Blueshirts are getting points and winning despite looking relatively horrid defensively. That is solely because of the play of their goaltenders, specifically Henrik Lundqvist. It would be lovely if the Rangers actually played defense, but that’s becoming a pipe dream at this point.

As for the #LoseForHughes campaign, the Blueshirts are currently 19th in the league. Based on team quality of those behind them, I would expect another four or five teams can surpass the Rangers. But they’ve banked enough points to stay out of the bottom tier of the league. They certainly have been playing like a bottom tier team though. Right now it’s the Lundqvist, Kreider, Zibanejad, and Hayes show.

Penguins Lines:

Jake Guentzel-Sidney Crosby-Bryan Rust

“Blueshirts are getting points and winning despite looking relatively horrid defensively”

That trend ends tonight if they don’t tighten up on defense. The Cindy led Pens are too good to play like we have been, and expect to win. All I want to see is us play hard, smack Cindy, and Igor around, and I’ll be happy!!!!!!!!!!!

Dave, you got your wish. That was a helluva period for the Blueshirts. Let’s see if they can keep it up for a full 60. Kudos to Hank for being named an All-Star. Would have liked to see Kreider go too but it’s tough to get more than 1 per team with this format.

Hockey fans other than some NYR fans would vote for Kreider. As of today, I doubt he would make team USA for the World Cup Of Hockey. The issue for him is that he’s not elite which is okay but he’s not a Mark Stone or Filip Forsberg type neither. He’s hardly a 50+ top line winger in this league.

Are you a troll? Krieder would not make Team USA is about the dumbest thing I’ve seen written here.

1st goal Shattenkirk’s stick was clearly held
2nd goal is on Staal, way too late to even try and tie up the stick — and God forbid he should body the player out of the crease
    3rd goal, slash on Buch’s hands …

    • Jan 2, 2019 at 10:47 pm

Nah Buch got the old hello and goodbye from Letang. Marian Hossa use to be notorious for picking his opponents pockets like that in the NZ.

4th goal was on Staal as well. Who leaves the weak side open like that on a rush play? Only Brent Burns can get away with doing silly stuff like that

How typical of you not to notice your all world 200 foot defense-first forward dogging his way back from the red line. He never even tried to get back until he crossed the blue line and was 10 feet out of position.

Hank follows up one of his best games with one of his worst. Guessing we see Georgi in the 3rd. It was fun while it lasted…

Tonight Lundqvist needed to help his team and stop a puck.

  • Jan 2, 2019 at 9:24 pm

That was a rookie coach mistake to leave Hank in there. He was way off. Bit of a learning curve for Quinn.

    • Jan 2, 2019 at 9:35 pm

Agreed and to take out the fast skating fiesty DelAngelo for the moves like his skates is in concrete Cloesson.

  • Jan 2, 2019 at 9:50 pm

The Pens went thru the motions the first period. We played a great 20 minute game. The roof caved in on us in the second, and our defense did exactly what I expected of them, they choked their collective chicken, and gave away the game…………………

Finally Hank allows the Rangers to show their true talent.

Wtf happened ? I’m off attending some health stuff and this ?!?!? I’ll be off for a bit and maybe some good meds to chime in some good stuff !

    • Jan 2, 2019 at 11:12 pm

Hank was trying to live up to your new name Sieve! But in actuality good on him for taking it on the chin for the loss and good on Quinn for recognizing that he made a mistake by playing Hank at all after the 2 intense road games. It really is time to give Georgi some regular action…

      • Jan 3, 2019 at 12:36 am

The name change worked … I see the auto correct is gonna have MC fired up! … lol And we passed by McLeod Rd , go figure??

  • Jan 2, 2019 at 11:00 pm

Clearly and I mean clearly message sent……This team needs to continue the rebuild and dump as many vets as possible…..what an atrocious performance this evening…….

    • Jan 3, 2019 at 12:38 am

This is gonna start happening. The other “Teams” are starting to line all their duckies up and getting in playoff mode!

  • Jan 3, 2019 at 4:49 am

Well, ladies and gentlemen, this is what it looks like when Hank does not play out of his mind.

Like I have said for almost all the years that he has been here, Hank masks the mediocrity of the team, which is why re-signing Hayes is basically a useless option.

Get a top 3 pick and get what yo can for the vets, and truly rebuild, and then forget FAs.

    • Jan 3, 2019 at 8:32 am

Like we both remarked yesterday Tony, there doesn’t seem to be a plan right now.

I am not going to get all bent out of shape by the drubbing they took from the Penguins. The Penguins have a bunch of elite player in their prime. The Rangers need to decide if they are going to keep their veteran forwards (except Zucc I assume) and if and when they will dispense with McQuaid and Smith. I think they can possibly retain Zibanejad Kreider and Hayes and Buch while doing the rebuild, but the other veterans should definitely be trade bait. Retaining Hayes depends on the cost and the offers other teams make for him.

      • Jan 3, 2019 at 1:30 pm

        I agree Peter.

My focus is long-term, but I honestly don’t know if the FO is on board with that. As I mentioned, Gorton and Quinn want to be for the long-term and give the young players a chance. But the main guy, Sather, is meddling and sabotaging that strategy.

Here’s the tell tale sign: If Hayes gets traded, then it’s truly Gorton’s gig. If Hayes is re-signed, then Sather is in charge and Panarin at $10M per is in play during the offseason.

Forget the BS talk, watch what they do.
