Shattenkirk, Pionk officially scratched tonight

Per Colin Stephenson, Kevin Shattenkirk and Neal Pionk are both scratched tonight. Cody McLeod is also a healthy scratch. Matt Beleskey was skating today at practice, which is a good sign.

Here are the lines for tonight:

Pavel Buchnevich-Mika Zibanejad-Jesper Fast
Chris Kreider-Brett Howden-Mats Zuccarello
Jimmy Vesey-Kevin Hayes-Ryan Spooner
Vlad Namestnikov-Filip Chytil-Vinni Lettieri

Brady Skjei-Adam McQuaid
Marc Staal-Tony DeAngelo
Frederik Claesson-Brendan Smith

PP1: Buch-Zibanejad-Kreider-Zuccarello-DeAngelo
PP2: Hayes-Howden-Spooner-Skjei-Chytil

This is certainly a shake up after three losses to open the season, to say the least.

Chytil in a tough spot…Fast is not a top line Forward…Good for TD! Helmet will come off at least twice tonight

Yeah he is in a tough spot but if he’s for real than he’ll be able to work himself back up in the lineup. Every Twitter report had them all mixed up to who was 1st and 4th lines. Dave is taking a wild swing here, Chytil’s line might become great and see 15+ mins of 5v5.

Don’t understand scratching Pionk at all. One of the better players through 3 games. Staal continues to play despite being an anchor to Pionk and the rest of the team.

Quinn talks about accountability? I will believe it when Staal gets scratched.

Vesey off the PP? Howden now on the PP, PK and good for 14-15 minutes with some quality on his flank. This is really going to take the wind out of the “Lias wasn’t demoted” talk. As I said over the summer months, Howden will push him down in the AHL and give Chytil a run for his money on a NHL roster. His 200 ft game is that much better than those two rookies.

The Pionk benching stinks of Staal’ s play. If the forwards aren’t backchecking than nobody will be able to stop San Jose tonight. I don’t know if I should be afraid of their rushes or all the pucks that’s going to get flung towards the net. Smith will fight Kane or Dillion tonight.

The defense is a mess here. McQuaid first pairing and Staal with ADA (poor ADA).

Scratching two right defensemen. What should be absolutely clear is that Quinn is totally out of step with the party line at BSB. Please understand he knows much more about hockey than we do. That doesn’t mean that when we disagree, he is always right, but the possibility should not be ruled out. The unfortunate thing going on here is this vast echo chamber where what gets said – both wise statements and foolish ones – get lots of agreement.

Marc Staal is not the hockey player he once was. But if you assume he is still a decent player, everything makes sense. If you assume he is awful, nothing makes sense. A good forward is constantly in motion because his job is action. A good goalie is almost never in motion because he is all about reaction. A good defenseman is somewhere in between. So if you see a defenseman standing still, it doesn’t mean he is wrong.
