Rangers acquire James Sheppard from San Jose

Per Bob McKenzie, the New York Rangers have acquired forward James Sheppard from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a 4th round draft pick in 2016. Sheppard is a left-handed center (who can play LW) that is a great shot suppressor and plays a solid defensive game. He has a line of 5-11-16 for San Jose this year.

A shutdown line of Sheppard-Moore-Fast is a great fourth line that can be a one of the best shot suppressing lines in the game.

  • You’re almost as busy as Slats. If what you say is true about Sheppard, it’s a great deal. I liked Stemp, but he wasn’t a 4th line guy.

  • I like Sheppard a lot, liked him as a Junior too. Will be really good on fourth line, things are shaping up.

  • Sounds like a good move to me. If he is slated for the 4th line, Moore, and Fast, great TG doesn’t play, now that’s a good move!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • LOL…we can only hope this helps squeeze glASS out. It certainly seems like a move in that direction.

    • Yeah but that isnt that big a deal for a pending ufa. It just helps us get under the cap for the rest of the season

  • Anyone want to guess what the new D pairs might be?

I wonder if AV is willing to play McD on the right of Yandle and move Dan Boyle out of the lineup?

    That would mean:

I guess the other option is simply plug Yandle in next to Boyle on the third pair.

    • I would like to see…

This way nobody plays their off-side, each pair gives you a good puck mover/offensive minded D with a very capable defensive minded D… That’s not to say I think Klein or Girardi are better than Yandle or Staal, I just think it’s more important to balance it out.

    • Why would they bench Boyle for Hunwick? Has AV ever sat Boyle over Hunwick? I can’t recall that ever being the case.

IMO the addition of Yandle gives the Rangers five Dmen that could be a top pair player on most teams in the league. Their D corps is flat out scary now.

  • The Stempniak trade now makes a little more sense.

A solid move shoring up the shutdown line.

  • It’s sinking in now. The Duke is gone, and the King is still here.

Plugging Lundquist and Fast back into this and subtracting Glass, this is among the very best teams in the league. The only thing I’d like to see is if they can somehow cut their losses w/ Boyle today for a stay at home 3rd pair D.

Happy Zucc is back and hoping Buch is what they say he is. Time to move forward.

The depth on lines 1-4 is pretty awesome. With each one playing AV high pressure hockey within their roles and the D now able to activate on demand, this team can overwhelm people.
