Call Ups/Demotions

Chris Mueller assigned to AHL

The New York Rangers have assigned center Chris Mueller to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL. Mueller has filled in somewhat nicely as an injury replacement as the 4C on the club, notching a goal and an assist in seven games this year.

Mueller’s demotion means that Derek Stepan is likely good to go for Saturday’s game, which is fantastic news.

  • Great news. Now the only question is whether AV lets Hayes play the 3c and bumps Moore back to the 4c.

    • The immediate concern with Hayes is that he’s 26% in the circle. I like Mueller in that regard (59% faceoffs) and think he has utility as 4C or fourth line wing as the case may be – he’s reliable if unspectacular.

Of course, Hayes’ hockey IQ is clearly apparent, and for a rookie he is seriously calm with the puck on his stick. Let him take his lumps on faceoffs – best way to improve is to keep trying…

      • Exactly, he’s only going to get better by taking more faceoffs. This happens with almost all young centers, once they are exposed to all the little tricks veterans use at the dot they start to adapt and improve.

Hayes does all the other things a center needs to do really well, so the Rangers can live with the poor faceoffs for now.

    • Per Spozo and SalMerc’s comment on Hayes, it seems like he’s turning into a very pleasant surprise.

  • I know that this is a necessary move but it was nice to see Mueller win some powerplay faceoffs cleanly… I will definitely miss that.

    • Stepan essentially voids mueller usage on. Hayes seems like one game on one game off. Needs to get that consistency.

  • The only real issue, as I see it anyway, is can we go with a heavily rookie 3rd line. Hayes between Duclair and Hagelin with protected starts. This group could prove to be very complementary to Kreider, Stepan, St. Louis; Nash, Brassard, Zuccarello as 1 and 2 interchangably with the 4th line of D. Moore centering Stempniak and Glass/Malone but better than Glass/Malone – Fast.
My opinion but… comments or feed-back?

    • Hags with Duc could work, and the speed would be devastating to deal with. If they don’t, well Hayes, with Kreider seems to jell from their college days together, another option!!!
