2014 Olympics: USA/Russia open thread

This morning at 7:30, Team USA (with Rangers Ryan Callahan, Ryan McDonagh, and Derek Stepan) will take on Russia in a game that will likely determine the Group A winner. Since the winner of each pool is guaranteed a spot in the quaterfinals (along with the best record among the second place teams), this is clearly the most important game for both teams. Use this thread to talk about the game, the Olympics, or anything else you want to discuss at 7:30 on a Saturday morning.

  • 1st period over both teams look about even.USA starts 2nd on PP. Fast pace first period. Both goalies look good. Quick slowing the game down when he needs too. Cally and Mac strong game so far. As of now its gonna be a lucky bounce to get past either goalie.

  • 2nd period USA flat for 12 mins. Pavel Dangle splits Defence down middle 1-0. USA big push back at the 15 min mark. Raddlov takes stupid penalty and Fowler ties game. Kane take a hooking call with .9 secs left in 2nd. Looks like its gonna be a very interesting 3rd.
I dont know about you guys, but when Kesler took that puck off the hand. Thought he was finished for the rest of the tournament, let alonethe game. Thank god he returned.

    • Kessler was effective for sure. The US won that game because top line NHL players put their ego on the shelf and fell into a role on the team. Kessler is that 3rd line shutdown 2way Centerman. Winning face offs and playing well in all 3 zones. Cally played well also playing a 2 way role.

  • I don’t like the Olympic SO rules. It was supposed to be Russia vs USA, not Kovalchuck vs Oshie.

But the kid got it done! USA!

    • The 1st 3 shooters were in succession. I guess Olympic rules allow for the coach to choose any shooter after that. The Russians had the opportunity to win it then. Quick was effective in those 3 rounds. I’m still shocked Bylsma went with JVR instead of Kane.

  • Ok, lets call an MVP of the game, lets leave goalies out.
I’m going to have to say Kessler. Out doing TJ and his 4 for 6 shoot out.

    • Kesler was very good. I also thought van Riemsdyk and Ryan Callahan were excellent in their roles and deserve kudos.

Also a vote for Russia’s Alexander Radulov for just a horrendous penalty that got the US back in the game – not to mention a second penalty that led to the US’ second goal.
