Rangers acquire defenseman Justin Falk from Minnesota

In the first move of the day, the Rangers have acquired defenseman Justin Falk from Minnesota in exchange for Benn Ferriero and a 6th round pick in 2014. Falk, a left handed shot, had a line of 0-3-3 in 36 games this past season, with a -9 rating and 40 PIMs. Falk isn’t terrible on the metrics side of things, with a 2.0 RCorsi (-1.28 CorsiON), a -0.694 Corsi Rel QoC, and 47.9% OZone starts. Falk would slide in nicely as a bottom pairing, depth defenseman.

Falk is one big dude (6’5, 215 lbs), and is more of a stay at home guy with a big body. At just 24 years old, there is a lot of room for Falk to improve. Falk is an RFA, and made $825,000 last season. I’d expect him to get about $1 million, maybe a little more.

      1. Well if this move has something to do with Mcilrath (which I’m not sure it does), wouldn’t it be smart to move him as soon as possible? The longer he’s in the minors and the older he gets, it seems the more his value will go down.

I still have faith in Mcilrath and hopefully he pans out. That could mean the team won’t have to ice guys like Arron Asham anymore.

  1. Not a significant move, but a good move nonetheless. It adds defensive depth at Hartford as well as for the Rangers, who are unlikely to bring back Gilroy, Hamrlik and possibly Eminger.

If the Rangers can develop Falk’s game a bit further, perhaps he becomes our #6 defenseman — and we sorely lack size on the blueline.

All in all, a good move.

  2. What do you think about Seguin to CBJ for 2 of their 1st round picks . Seguin is only 21 and you might nnot mget a player of his caliper in the draft with any of their picks .

      1. They might. They’re in a little cap situation right now with Tuukka Rask looking at $7M and a possible extension (for big $) for Patrice Bergeron. Seguin’s cap hit is $5.75M and you can see Boston is losing some faith in the kid. Either way, it’s a long shot that they trade Seguin anyway, but if they do, word is they are looking at a first rounder as a package starter. Use that savings to dip into the FA market for a player or two to create some depth as Nathan Horton is not re-signing with Boston either.

  3. On an unrelated note, Pitt’s about to become very top heavy with their cap with the imminent 8/$58 deal with Kris Letang.

They must be counting on the cap significantly increasing after this season.

  4. Never heard of the guy????

At his size, maybe they can teach him how to play, and bulk him up a bit. At 6’5″, 215 lbs, he is narrow at the hip don’t you think?????
