The Rangers scouts and draft team are looking and feeling pretty good right now. Over the past weekend second round pick Christian Thomas had another strong stretch  and has grabbed 9 points in his last 3 games. Thomas has catapulted himself into 10th in scoring in the Ohl and has 69 points for the season and at his current pace, wont be too far from a landmark 100 point season when all is said and done. Some people projected Thomas to go later in last year’s draft but the Rangers continue to draft well in the second round and at this stage Thomas looks like a great pick. Thanks to a 3 game winning streak Thomas’ Generals are 28-14-4-4 and are sitting in second in the East Division behind Otttawa. Look for Thomas to lead Oshawa as they chase Ottawa for first place.

On Monday night Chris Kreider and his Boston College team took on BU as the Beanpot tournament kicked off. Kreider’s side won a tight result, 3-2, while the Rangers prospect was scoreless with a +1 rating. With the win the Eagles are 20-6 on the season while Kreider sits on 16 points in 24 games.  Unfortunately the winger is the only minus amongst the top ten Eagles scorers though by all accounts the young winger has been used in a lot of defensive situations which may help explain his season to date. At this stage though, another year in college wouldnt be a bad thing and given the Rangers youth up front there’s no need to rush such a top prospect.

While Christian Thomas has started to run away as the Rangers top scoring prospect several others are still playing strong seasons. Despite his -14 rating Roman Horak of Chilliwack (WHL) has 58 points on the season thus far with 22 goals. The Bruins arent having a good season as they are bottom of their division with just 22 wins on the season though they do have some games in hand. Personally for Horak however, he’s eclipsed last seasons point total by 11 (already) and achieved that in 21 games less so on the individual side of things there’s plenty of reason to be happy for Rangers fans.

Elsewhere in the prospect world, Ryan Bourque has 48 points in just 37 games for his Quebec Ramparts and has a strong +12 to go with his 24 goals. Ethan Werek is 37 in 32 for the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL while 2010 pick Dylan Mcilrath has suffered a minor injury and is day to day at present. Mcilrath has 20 points on the season for his Moose Jaw side. We’ll look at Carl Hagelin, another strong Rangers pick, from Michigan in greater detail later in the week.
