Game 56: We won one yesterday. Win another, it’s called two in a row

After the strong effort on Friday night, the Rangers are in Winnipeg to take on a very strong Jets team that is a serious playoff contender. The Jets have a very deep forward group and have been getting strong goaltending. The injury to Jacob Trouba weakens the blue line, but it’s still a solid d-corps as well.

The Blueshirts actually played well on Friday, putting together an effort that was reminiscent of the good old days when it looked like they actually cared. Stringing them together is going to be the trick if they want to stay relevant, even during the eventual fire sale. But hey, weirder things have happened.

Jets Systems

Paul Maurice and the Jets play a 1-2-2 forecheck which can be used aggressively or conservatively depending on game situation (e.g., puck location, matchup, time left on the clock, score, etc.). In the defensive zone, the Jets play a zone defense, with five skaters getting sticks and bodies in lanes.

On special teams, the Jets play an umbrella PP and will look to crash the net after a shot. On the PK, the Jets play a rotating box and look to defend homeplate. For more on the systems, click here.

    Mark Schiefele

One of the most under rated superstars in the game.

  2. Emile the Cat says:

I feel ashamed that I felt so ambivalent towards such an entertaining victory Friday night.

  3. Stevem says:

Win another one after that.. that’s called a winning streak. It has happened before

  4. joe from newburgh says:

Give these guys credit. They know what’s going on, they know that some of them are going to be somewhere else tomorrow, or the next day, or next week, but they didn’t lay down and die against Calgary. If they can at least keep it entertaining until the end of the season, and we end up with a better team next year, I’ll be happy.

Hank made some good saves on the Power play against … I think every player on the Jets is 6’2″ or bigger 😳

  12. Leatherneck says:

I want to thank for the fairness shown by so many of you yesterday. Chris F nailed me spot on in his description.

The beauty is opinions are just that….numerous times I have stated I am not a Leaky hater….I just hate the bias and pass he gets.

Calling him Leaky won’t stop with me. That’s how I feel about him.

As far as spozo and Mancun….I don’t hate them….I don’t know them however I do differ with them on opinion

Yesterday I called them shitbirds….that’s actually a term of endearment from a NCO to his subordinates in the Marine Corps

  13. Leatherneck says:

Hey Sieve….you just broke a record for thumbs down….lol…..

To thine own selves we shall stay true brother

    • King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! says:

Also I got a bunch of dislikes cause I pedaled up and down the beach in 82 degree sunny weather with a passing of Our Prez’s house, think that’s where all the hate is coming from 😉

  14. Dan says:

It’s still blacked out for me on MSG plus (in Brooklyn). And I can’t even watch the highlight of Zuccs goal on the rangers app. Can we trade MSG network? Get a 3rd or 4th rounder??

  15. Reenavipul says:

I’m at the game, youse ain’t missing much. A bit of rotation between 77, 55, 58 & 44, Kampfer is meh.

Toby Enstrom just got drilled by McLeod.

  16. HOF19 says:

So if we go on a winning streak do we not go into rebuild mode ???

    • Chris F says:

I think the FO is pretty committed to a rebuild, regardless of how the rest of the season shakes out.

      • King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! says:

I’d rather see Pionk and Gilmour on the ice instead of Holden

        • Chris F says:

Yeah, just give the reins to DeAngelo, Pionk, and Gilmore. Bring up Chytil, maybe even Andersson. Let them work through these last 20-25 games, and hopefully they’ll be ready to rock next season.

          • Reenavipul says:

The problem(as I see it) is that with an expansion draft on the horizon, the organization now need to protect certain assets going forward.

Chytil & Andersson now have 1 NA pro season under their belts, can’t have a 2nd until 19-20 without having to protect them. Even if they’re good enough to produce at a NHL level, does it behoove the team to play them next season in the A or the show?

            • Chris F says:

I don’t know… do you forego an entire season of Chytil/Andersson even if they’re ready?

I get wanting to limit number of guys who need to be protected, but at the cost of losing two young guys for an entire season?

              • Reenavipul says:

That’s why I put it out there. If not managed, then players like Vesey get exposed when they don’t need to.

The idea should be to tank hard in a year where they stink, deal assets with term for a chance at lottery picks this season or 2020, rentals for 2019 or 20 picks whose teams are a year or 2 away from falling off a cliff.

Continue the filling gaps to compete for playoffs until it goes south model, set up for an extended run from 2019-20 on with Shestorkyin as the goalie.

It shouldn’t be the primary focus, but it is something that is controllable via the CBA.

          • Leatherneck says:

            Yeah….all 3 are playing well

I am on the Graves camp, however Gilmore has been outstanding

    • Richter1994 says:

They made a public announcement, they are not turning back.

New twist on the coach though, Sather wants him back and Gorton doesn’t. If the Rangers some how make the playoffs after all the changes then looks like he comes back. Stay tuned.

      • Reenavipul says:

If they make the playoffs after trading away the likes of Nash, Grabner, Zucc & McD then JG should win the Jack Adams.

My seats today didn’t allow me much of a look at the D at times.

        • Richter1994 says:

Unfortunately if the Rangers make the playoffs in spite of the assumed trades, then (gulp), AV will probably stay.

  17. HOF19 says:

I have video and audio !!!!!!!!!!

    • King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! says:

That’s why I was getting so many dislikes … I was one of the only ones watching the game.

  18. Reenavipul says:

Great to see AV work the refs with a 2 goal lead and 30 seconds to go. Way to set the tone for the next game

  19. HOF19 says:

OK Sam Rosen we won a game not the Stanley Cup.

  20. Walt says:

I don’t care what anyone else says, the three kids on defense, ADA, Pionk, and Gilmore played a very good game. Nice victory for the boys!!!!

    • King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! says:

Yes they did! Now what happens when the traffic cones come back?Gilmour has some speed,DeA made a few mistakes but he’s gotta be in it and learn.Pionk was solid.

    • Rich S says:

      100% correct Walt!!!
Dont mind reminding Management how many of us have been advocating all year for AV to play ADA and Letteri……and Gilmore was terrific in preseason and I thought he deserved a chance also!!!!
MICHAEL GRABNER may not be an elite player BUT he sure plays like one!!! Again , like I have been saying since last year SIGN HIM ……4-5 years ….give him the ”C” until Vesey is ready to wear it !!!!
We still need a bruiser on defense and maybe a matt martin type forward going forward, but by all that is Holy….resign Grabner!!!!!!

  21. Gary says:

Wouldn’t be cool to be counted out, have traded the guys who are going and watch the team, with the kids on the roster now and those to come, actually make hockey fun again this season? That would be so cool to root for an underdog team in the making.

I like every one of the guys on the block (well, Holden, DD… ehhh) but this page turning is going to be fun. I actually see in Pionk, D’Angelo and maybe Gilmour the glimmers we saw w/ the Bruins last year after they committed to retool. The difference is they retooled around a cup winning core that is still intact. So our turnaround may be more of process.

Did not see today’s game but I liked the energy from these kids along with several others the other night vs. Calgary.

  22. Peter says:

What a nice game all around. There was some pride out there and enthusiasm. They beat a very good team playing the kids. Nothing not to like there.

  23. rglv says:

What just have happened? Did someone forget to tell them they were supposed to TANK? I guess it was all AV fault… But seriously, you take away his “reliable” choices, and you get results. Great win especially for the young guys.

    • Reenavipul says:

In case you didn’t notice, the stretch pass out of the zone is out of favor and while controlled exits aren’t the 1st choice, they’re happening more often. The idea is to force the other team to break shape and work off that instead of pounding square pegs into round holes. As the game went on they got away from doctrine and for the better.

Way more convo between Ruff and the new boys, I guess a lot can change in a week.

  24. Peter says:

By the way. The Mighty Zuccarello got his mojo back. Maybe he wants to stay in New York.

  25. HARLEMBLUES says:

It’s great to see the young players getting their opportunity to play in the show. While learning they are playing and pushing hard to make the playoffs. The last 20 plus games have got me excited to see how this all develops. Groton still needs to sell no matter what’s happening on the ice. McD goes Nash goes Grabner goes Holden goes DD goes. For the right price I would trade Hank and Zuccarello. This team needs high end skill, speed and toughness. Be smart sell high and the Rangers will be set up for years to come. Be smart.

  26. odielicious says:

This is such a fickle bunch. Now we are praising the kids? Come guys the game I watched was alot different from the one you saw. Kids were kids…made some grave mistakes but recovered and/or hank bailed them out.

Miller had one of the worst games of anyone. Surprised to see AV put him back out after those 2 bone head penalties to start the third. He just looked flat. The Angry hobbit showed up again and am happy for that. I guess Smith was really just a cancer in this locker room. Nash was a no show. If anything if Mac comes back and the angry hobbit disappears we know who Zuc doesn’t like.

This game was solely won by Hank. He was really on top of his game. That save of Laine with the blocker that was awesome cause it was tattooed for the stick side high corner. That is normally his weakness. Ace’s to hank. I will admit I picked the game up mid 2nd so I missed the first half. But that show I watched was all hank.

Kampfer getting 22 minutes is not ideal in my book. Skjei with 25 is I guess ok. Gilmour got 12 min all game. Where are the haters of AV? Pionk got 15 mins. Play the damn kids AV …see what we got. I don’t care about the wins as long as the effort is there I will be happy! I am not calling for a Tank just lets see what we have before the deadline and make smart choices with that knowledge.

Making the playoffs will put us in the same seat the Rangers are always in. Try to play the Kids so atleast we can really see them sink or swim. You can’t please me with a 2 bit win of only playing your regulars.

    • Walt says:

“Kids were kids…made some grave mistakes but recovered and/or Hank bailed them out”.

How the hell are they to learn, if not to make mistakes, have them shown what they did wrong, and try again. I saw some life out there, something that’s been missing for some time. Maybe AV feels the heat under his ass, and simplified the game yesterday, because they didn’t have too many of those stretch passes, just quick short outlet passes, or skated the puck out of the zone. The kids played with spunk, when was the last time anyone said that of Staal????????? Just my thoughts!!!!

      • odielicious says:

I will just say I like Staal’s game. You might not like it but I do. He is effective with his stick and good in the corners. He doesn’t have the speed on the rush but that is a exchange I will take.

Really you missed my point it was about playing the kids more then 12 and 15 minutes respectively.

  27. Mancunian Candidate says:

Quite a bit of chatter from some posters early; and then of course it dried up late as the Rangers won. How about that goaltending yesterday?
