Letteri is second in points and leads team in goals, and is righty ………..I have not seen him play in hartford, but who says he is apparently not playing well?
That being said, I dont expect a lot out of him, but he if he plays like he did in preseason he appears to be an upgrade over Carey and DD.
Not sure if it was you who was down on Anton Strallman…..?
He is currently leading the league in plus minus with + 24…….another Sather/AV success story…..for another team! Couldn’t resist……

finast 1mg tablet Huh? What? Not following you here buddy.

          I said…

“….he’s apparently been playing well”. I did not say the opposite.

It’s always good to keep expectations low with what I would call “B” level type prospects. This isn’t the next McDavid here. The transition to the NHL is not always easy. So yes, agree, don’t expect much but hope for the best. That’s the way I do it anyway.

Carey and DD have been just fine in their roles. Both good signings for what they are. No complaints.

As for Stralman, I was never down on the guy. Would have liked if he could have stayed. But at what price and term? At the time, it was hardly a slam dunk to keep him. His track record had not been real good up until his last year or so in NY, when he was good (but hardly great). Go back and read the articles of that time. Girardi was considered by far the better player and when he came off the market, many thought the Rangers made a good move retaining the best available defenseman at that time.

Obviously, I think we’d all agree we’d like to do that one over. Want to blame Sather? Fair enough. Blame AV? I’d say that’s a reach without evidence to support he wanted him out, which I doubt.

Sorry, read your comment wrong…….regarding letteri…
It probably was someone else who commented as to strallmans poor play the past few years……
I remember him as being our ”’best defenseman”’ the last 1/3 of the season and the playoffs and was really disappointed to see him go …..later we find out sather didn’t even make an offer and strallman said he would have taken less to stay here…..said….yes it was sathers call but do you think the coach had zero input in the decision?

“The last 1/3 of the season”. That’s the key here. Probably true (other than McDonagh). But remember, they already made the decision to keep Girardi at that point. So do you open the vault to keep Stralman too? I know he said he would take a discount, but how much of one?

As I said before, part of the GM’s job is to project ahead. In June of 2014, the Rangers had to project ahead and maybe assume that, by now, Kreider and Miller might be further along and would therefore be paid more. And perhaps a bigger deal for a then up and coming player like Derek Stepan. Again, I’m just speculating here, but the point is the decision to retain Stralman couldn’t be made in a vacuum and not consider the effect on the rest of the roster.

As for AV’s role in this, again, that we will likely never know. I have no doubt AV is asked for his input on every move. But at the end of the day, it’s not the coach’s job to manage the cap. That’s the GM’s responsibility 100%. My hunch is that if they had re-signed Stralman, it might have impacted some other move. That’s a lot of money to tie up in defensemen.

One last point. Stralman has largely thrived being paired with a likely future HOFer in Hedman. Are you sure he would be as effective if he had remained with the Rangers? I doubt it. He’d still be good and I wish we had him. But I don’t think he’d be nearly as effective.

Woulda/shoulda nonsense. He wasn’t ready for the NHL and in fact got off to a slow start in Hartford. Has played better in recent weeks as he got more pro experience and playing time. Now, hopefully, he will be a more polished product and in a better position to help the team. Still is a big jump to make, so don’t expect miracles here.

Perfectly reasonable approach the team took here. Carey has been solid on the 4th line.

        Amen

Interestingly, Peter Holland really turned Hartford around, but I am guessing the Rangers are planning on this being a short call up and don’t want to have to risk sending Holland back through waivers.

I do hope Lettieri gets some top nine minutes. Buchnevich’s tendency to try to keep the puck forever (ala early Kovalev) makes him an ideal fourth liner.
