Game 26: Remember, Carolina is good

The last time the Rangers and the Canes met, it was one week ago on Thanksgiving Eve. The Blueshirts spanked the Canes, mocking my game thread title that the Canes are actually good. Well I’m doubling down on it. The Canes are actually pretty good, and last week’s 6-1 drubbing is not a true indication of their talent level.

While I’m not expecting the same result, I am expecting the same track meet. The Rangers dominated the game last week, but I fully expect the pace to stay high in this game.

Canes Systems

Under Bill Peters, the Canes play a passive 1-2-2 on the forecheck and look to trap up the neutral zone. In their own end they run your standard low zone collapse. Not the most exciting of systems. On special teams, they run an umbrella powerplay, and a diamond/box hybrid PK.

For more on these systems, check out our Hockey Systems page.

Did you write this Wednesday morning?

  2. Stevem says:

Please for the love of the Almighty, come out with some jump and not decide to come out for the second and third period only. If all else fails, start dumping pucks at Darling from section 419.. his outfielding skills suck.

    • Richter1994 says:

      Start was middle.

      • Stevem says:

I missed the game last night as I was playing a gig in the city.. saw Williams goal and thought to myself, Thank God I’m busy… Saw the Desharnais goal during a break we had and nearly soiled myself laughing. Darling handles the puck like it’s a grenade with the pin pulled

        • Richter1994 says:

The charts accurately reflect the game.

Incredible how bad Darling was on that gift.

  3. ken in sarasota says:

Does anyone know what our lines really are tonight?

  4. Bloomer says:

McDonough in Zibanejab out…. Looks line David Des R Eh will get the start with Kreider and Bush.

  5. King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! says:

    • Bloomer says:

Leaky lets in the first shot on goal by father time. Hope he’s ready for the next puck.

      • King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! says:

Clearly Smith’s Fault , how dare you call him Leaky – off with ur head

      • Hockey Sittoo says:

Guess he was ready for the next 32 pucks…

        • Bloomer says:

Yes he was.. and the win puts the Rangers into a playoff position.

Grabner with the hat although 2 were empty netters. McDonough looking good in his return and DD playing much better after spending time in AVs doghouse.

          • Chris F says:

Also benefiting from playing alongside Kreider and Buch, and given a freebie by Darling.

            • Richter1994 says:

Darling, that’s 2 gifts from him in 2 games. He’s the gift that just keeps giving to the Rangers.

Maybe with all the Ranger fans in both houses, he gets stage fright.

    • Mancunian Candidate says:

      Get a life sieve.

  6. Bloomer says:

The left handed fellow De R Eh capitalize on a Carolina Goalie debacle. This game is tied.

  7. Bloomer says:

Left handed Grabner redirects a nice Shattenkirk crosshead upstairs. Ranger takes the lead.

  8. Mancunian Candidate says:

The silence of the trolls. How about that? Lots to say early, nothing to say late.

  9. wwpd says:

only 4 SOG for the 1st line and one was the gift to DD from Darling in the closing moments, but a natural hatty for grabs40. now that would have been a crazy prediction.

Dave, the ‘canes ARE still good, we know 🙂

  10. Pete says:

Hank was quite good after the goal. Nice stop on the penalty shot.

First Grabner goal was nice work by Shatty with a lovely pass and Grabner getting great position on the defender. Then the two empty netters, the first one just crushing the Canes. Grabner scores empty netters because he can fly and knows where to be to get that pass and break out. Once he has it no one is going to catch him. Nothing to sneeze at. May he get 10 more like that and snuff out teams in the 3rd!

    • Richter1994 says:

Grabner getting goals is the reward lately as he has been playing really, really well. With the puck and away from the puck.

  11. Richter1994 says:

I was at the game and this kid Aho is just a tremendous offensive player. The speed he has is just incredible, very high end skill.

I don’t care what the scoreboard says, the Rangers cannot defend worth a dam. I heard that Sam Rosen said that Holden had a strong game. I don’t know what he was looking at because the player got beat no less than 5 times during the game. That I counted.

Lundqvist continues to make his mates look good, even after giving up a brutal goal 30 seconds in. Henrik still gets, by far and away, the biggest cheers during the pregame introductions and it’s not even close.

The stat of the night for me that showed up on the scoreboard: Fast is 3rd on the team in hits. Great, and he missed how many games to start the year?

I felt like the Rangers got better 2nd and in close scoring chances this game. They seemed to go to the net a little more which is a good sign. Maybe the trade rumors are sending messages to the forwards.

Grabner has been playing well all season, with and without the puck, and in defending with back checks, etc. The last 15 games or so he’s getting rewarded for his great play. Well deserved.
