Rangers sign undrafted free agent forward Dawson Leedahl

Jeff Gorton’s raid of undrafted free agents continues. This time, he nabbed Regina Pats leading scorer Dawson Leedahl. The 21-year-old LW finished with a line of 35-54-89 in 71 games this season, almost triple his output from last season. He also put up 11-12-23 in 19 playoff games, with his Pats vying for the WHL Championship. He isn’t just a scorer, as Leedahl succeeded with Everett’s defense first system, becoming caption, before his trade to start the season.

Leedahl is a little bit of everything. He scores, plays in all three zones, hits, and leads by example. A good comparison would be Ryan Callahan, but dialing back the expectations a bit. His style is similar, but the Rangers would be lucky to get a huge contributor like that. Regardless, Leedahl adds much needed scoring and physical punch to a Hartford lineup that desperately needs it.

Leedahl certainly needs a few seasons in the AHL before he has a realistic chance of cracking the Rangers roster.

Gorton saw overtime and went out and signed him.

Funny, when in the related articles section this pops up:

“Michael St. Croix: Potential 2011 draft day steal? Mar 7, 2012”

Hopefully this kid turns out a bit better than a guy who couldn’t crack AHL, and regressed in ECHL.

Could have killed it in Europe, now out of hockey.

Scoring 30 in the WHL ain’t what it used to be.

you’re our go to guy when it comes to a load of kids:

        is he a fast skater?

        how big is this kid?

is he tough, and works the boards well?

does he take guff, or dishes it out?

he didn’t cost anything, so I won’t get too excited either!!!!

St. Croix or Leedahl? The former is 5’10”, so so skater, but had great vision & hands.

Leedahl is a bigger guy, but here’s a comparison.

          Age 21 season
          Player 1: 6’2″, 218lbs; 1.27ppg
          Player 2: 6’2″, 194lbs; 1.25ppg

One of those players was just signed, the other was drafted by the Rangers but not offered.

Just looked him up, he’s 5’11”, 180 lbs, another smaller guy??????? He’ll play for the Pack, that’s about it I would assume………

Sounds better than Stephan and a few others we have…..

Would hope Gorton sign some toughness for the system in Hartford and hopefully for the Rangers too

    • Jerry says:

      Hey Al,
The rangers need EVERYTHING in Hartford. EVERYTHING. Hartford is in that situation because we give away draft picks on a regular basis. Maybe now with Gorton that asinine practice will cease and we can develope a minor league system that’s not a joke.

  5. DAVID k says:

Gorton needs to find some RH forwards and a d-man that can blast a point shot on goal. We only have 3 RH forwards Mikam Stepan & Fast need more balance in forwards.
