The Rangers are back in Montreal tonight for a pivotal Game 5 after showing some life with a big win in Game 4. The biggest need for the Rangers is to consistently play like they did on Tuesday night. If they do –meaning their process is solid– then they certainly have more skill than the Habs up and down the lineup.

As for the game, this is probably the one that decides the series, at least in my opinion. I think the winner tonight takes the series, so this is a huge one for both teams. The Rangers have had the edge in net all series, with Henrik Lundqvist outplaying Carey Price, but it’s been the process of the 18 skaters that has made the difference.

Habs Lines

Max Pacioretty-Philippe Danault-Alex Radulov
Artturi Lehkonen-Alex Galchenyuk-Andrew Shaw
Paul Byron-Tomas Plekanec-Brendan Gallagher
Dwight King-Steve Ott-Torrey Mitchell

Andrei Markov-Shea Weber
Jordie Benn-Jeff Petry
Nathan Beaulieu-Alexei Emelin

PP1: Galchenyuk-Shaw-Radulov-Markov-Weber
PP2: Pacioretty-Danault-Gallagher-Beaulieu-Petry

Carey Price gets the start

Rangers Lines

Chris Kreider-Mika Zibanejad-Pavel Buchnevich
Jimmy VeseyDerek StepanRick Nash
JT MillerKevin HayesMats Zuccarello
Michael GrabnerOscar LindbergJesper Fast

Ryan McDonaghDan Girardi

Brady SkjeiBrendan Smith

PP1: Zibanejad-Buchnevich-Kreider-Zuccarello-McDonagh
PP2: Stepan-Hayes-Nash-Miller-Skjei

Henrik Lundvist gets the start.

Crazy Prediction: Buchnevich with the hat trick.

    My heart…

  2. HOF 19 says:

Take the edge in this series tonight !!!!!…OWN THE ICE TONIGHT…….OWN IT !!!!!!!!!!….LETS GO RANGERS !!!!!!!!

  3. Chris F says:

Pierre lauding the Rangers depth at center, highlighting Lindberg as a possible game changer. Someone check the temperature in Hell.

  4. Chris F says:

Holy f@#$, Zuke! Elevate the puck!

    • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

Exactly! This is what just drives me nuts about this team. You MUST capitalize on grade A chances vs this goalie….you MUST.

But this is the pass first, no real finishers, no-margin-for error Rangers we are talking about. If we lose, this is the reason why. That’s not about coaching. FINISH for crying out loud!!!!!!

      As you just said…my heart.

Hank looking sharp again…but if it’s me, you got to think about putting Raanta in, right? Just to get the team fired up. 🙂

    • Richter1994 says:

Put it right into Price’s pad. You have to score on a chance like that. Then Buch passes when he has Price moving side to side and an open net, what’s with them?

      • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

Limited finishing instincts. We are a Tarasenko type away (and maybe Shattenkirk too) from being legitimately dangerous. In the meantime, we will enjoy what we have and the run that we are on!

        • Richter1994 says:

Bingo bro. I love Nash but he’s not the finisher that he was. We don’t have enough finishers.

The Rangers could be playing horribly but were one shot from Jagr away from a goal. A true sniper.

There is no question that no one on the Rangers has “scorer’s hands.”

  5. HOF 19 says:

    Nice move Pavel !

  6. Chris F says:

Buchnevich already making his presence felt!

  7. Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

For the love of God (or Jean Ratelle or Rod Gilbert) can we PLEASE score a PP goal?!

  8. HOF 19 says:

Smitty standing up for his goaltender !!!!!

  9. Chris F says:

When I grow up I want to be Brendan Smith.

  10. Leatherneck says:

Starting to love me some Brendan Smith

    • Richter1994 says:

I didn’t like your Buch for Kreider comment but I love this comment. He should be resigned as long as it’s not more than $3.5M per.

  11. Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

Real good acquisition by Gorton. But why is AV playing him? I thought he hates all physical defensemen? 🙂

  12. HOF 19 says:

That started with Stahl letting the Montreal player taking the puck away from him.

  13. Leatherneck says:

Dumb ass Staal….I prefer Girardi over him….he is atrocious

    • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

Can’t argue with you there. That pairing is a weakness. Problem is their personnel can exploit our weaknesses. Our supposed depth “stars” cant exploit their deficiencies.

      • Reenavipul says:

It took 87 games for a HOF coach to figure out the obvious. Supergenius!!

        • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

Yeah..if only he had taken your advice and rotated Raanta in during those final couple of weeks, just think how much sharper Hank would have been. Or not.

    • Stevesse says:

      What a pos.

  14. Leatherneck says:

Staal is really brain dead since his injury

  15. Chris F says:

Staal/Holden is an absolute, unrelenting disaster. I’d take Clendening and Kampfer over both them right now.

    • Leatherneck says:

So would I. it’s called making adjustments. To be honest Kampfer was really good in the games he played

      • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

Be careful with knee jerk reactions. Staal was good last game. Kampfer and Clendo have no playoff experience. Way too risky.

        • Chris F says:

These are just the most basic plays that Staal and Holden continue to bungle. It’s a risk, for sure, but at some point these two need to be held accountable.

        • paulronty says:

Staal’s problem is that he has to play with Holden, a modern day Igor Ulanov.

  16. Leatherneck says:

    Quickieeeeeeee….and a shorty….

  17. Chris F says:

Quickie! Quickie! Quickie! Holy sh!t, what a clutch goal!!

  18. Leatherneck says:

Oh my God…there is no justice I tell you

  19. Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

And then there’s Fast, who everyone out here wants to bench or run out of town, proving why he is indeed the Players’ Player two years in a row!

    • Reenavipul says:

He’s got 1/3 of his regular season output in 1/15 the games!! Sign him for a 10 year deal!!

He’s a nice player, but a fungible one. You have to plug any jamoke on an ELC in there to keep the salary structure intact. You don’t bridge him, you deal him and turn a late round pick into a mid round one.

      This isn’t rocket science.

      • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

Who’s talking contract here? He’s a valuable, albeit understated piece to the puzzle. Not only do the coaches realize this but so do the players. We are a better team with him than without him.

  20. Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

    And then…ugh!

  21. Leatherneck says:

Hayes needs to get his head out of his ass

  22. Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

Miller…1 post season goal in 32 playoff games. That our Untouchable Elite Beast! The very definition of overrated.

  23. HOF 19 says:

Why are we always swimming upstream………always……..ALWAYS !…..GET A 2 GOAL LEAD….GET YOUR HEAD OUTTA YOUR BUTTS OR THIS SEASON COULD BE OVER QUICK !

    • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

Because our forwards are painfully overrated, that’s why. Our defense is what it is at the moment. We knew that going into the season. Can’t expect Hank to be perfect every game. As I said, I feel sorry for him, given the lack of quality talent he’s had to carry most of his eleven seasons.

Our strength was supposed to be our dynamic forwards. But they haven’t been anything close to dynamic in two months. Thus, we swim upstream and hope Hank can be brilliant in periods 2 and 3.

Given our typical post-season output, the best we can hope for is score a goal late to push it to OT. If the Habs score again, the way these elite stars are going, might as well change the channel.

      Just venting… I won’t. :).

  24. paulronty says:

Great play by Z on the shortie & then we give it right back. Sigh.

  25. Leatherneck says:

Miller has been good, he is not the problem, Kreider is and Zukey not finishing is too…thats 3 Zuke should have had

    • Leatherneck says:

      3 in this series

    • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

But that’s the problem. Good is not good enough. He’s supposed to put points on the board. He’s been an atrocious playoff performer in that regard and really hasn’t been effective in two months.

Good play (and that’s debatable frankly) from one of your best forwards won’t cut it. We need great. Can he be?

  26. Stevesse says:

Watch Hayes. Is that the slowest player you ever saw? He doesn’t know how to play playoff hockey. His reaction time is in minutes. No desire. Not the kind of player a team wins with.

    • Leatherneck says:

I agree…he is slow with his vision on the ice too since the playoffs started

  27. Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

I can’t remember where I heard this. NHL Network Radio maybe? But there was a discussion about Hayes and conversation then turned to his brother Jimmy. Serious questions about their motor and desire.

I thought Hayes was pretty good last game. But again, like Miller, good won’t cut it.

As for Kreider, I’d settle for good right now. Just horrible.

    • paulronty says:

Holy F Eddie. You are so nihilistic & negative I can’t believe it!!!! 🙂

      • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

It’s years of watching Rangers playof hockey under Torts and AV. Styles change, players change, but every friggin game it seems is Armageddon.

This is my “game personality”. Pissed off and want everyone out when they struggle. Then I calm down and attempt to get rational. 🙂

  28. Leatherneck says:

    Smith better be signed

  29. Leatherneck says:

Oh man….Zuke is way off his game today…a detriment actually big time

  30. Leatherneck says:

If only our powerplay could have looks and possession like that

  31. HOF 19 says:

    C’mon make plays !!!

  32. HOF 19 says:

Ice seems to be tilted right now……Better fix that real….real soon guys !

  33. Leatherneck says:

    disappointing performance….too many no shows….stupid mistakes….lazy
AV should call a timeout and embarrass them…by yelling…Do someting AV…this is nuts

  34. Dan says:

Kreider is killing me!! Buch and Z are skating strong each shift they’re out there and making plays … maybe AV should put someone else with the two of them. He needs to eat some bench for a little to maybe get him going bc he’s not doing anything!!!

  35. Leatherneck says:

half way through…only 10 shots on the best goalie in the league….this is insane

    • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

Totally overrated offense. As usual, it’s all up to Hank and then we have to hope for a mistake or two.

  36. HOF 19 says:

How come we hit them they get right back up….They hit us we get up slow ???

  37. Leatherneck says:

Freaking Stepan…..this team is showing no will except a handful of people… Lundqvist, Smith, Girardi, Lindberg, Fast, Nash and Glass when he played… that’s it…on the bubble….McDonagh (not consistent)

  38. Leatherneck says:

To look defeated with this much time goes on AV….If I were the coach I would have called a timeout and berated them to make sure the TV cameras would get it filmed …this is unacceptable…they are getting beat to everything

  39. Leatherneck says:

and the best chance and no shot on goal

  40. HOF 19 says:

This team just has lousy play making skills !

  41. Chris F says:

Rangers been pressing, but whiffing on some great chances. But, let it never be said that Rick Nash isn’t a playoff performer. Beast! Heads up play by Skjei and we’re back in this thing!

  42. Leatherneck says:

Wow….Vesey made that happen….Nash willed it

  43. paulronty says:

It’s freakin amazing we are still in this game!! The Rangers have been totally outplayed, but have a chance to win this thing.

    • Leatherneck says:

      I know, it’s crazy

      • Chris F says:

It’s encouraging to know that we’ve played this flat and yet head to the third all tied up. Hank has been great, but Habs have to be flustered with the outcome after two periods.

  44. HOF 19 says:

That (hopefully) could be a BIG goal (considering the time of the game when it happened ) and a fair amount of that play was Nash…….LETS GO RANGERS

  45. Chris.C says:

They need to throw the bodies heavier. Is it me or is everyone not finishing there checks. Cant allow Montreal total free rein

  46. HOF 19 says:

I think a PP goal by us would almost shock me.

  47. Leatherneck says:

Just decline powerplay chances….they deflate this team

  48. Spozo says:

Apparently Kreider is playing tonight guys. He just had a burst of speed and a shot 7 minutes in to the 3rd.

    • Dan says:

His best shift the whole series!! … ridiculous that we notice that in game 5 of this series. He’s gotta step it up.

  49. Bloomer says:

Smith tied up at habs blueline. Zuc stays with weber all the way to the ranger net. Zuc is small but he doesnt know hes small.

  50. Leatherneck says:

    We stink on faceoffs too

  51. Leatherneck says:

Come on refs….can’t be calling that….with so little time left…when you let so many other infractions go

  52. Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

Miller is a train wreck. Horrible play and then an utterly stupid penalty. This is why he’s spent time in AV’s Chateau De Bow Wow. The PK bailed his butt out.

Hank tremendous again. But maybe we should start Raanta in OT? 🙂

As I said, no chance this team can score three goals in regulation, so here we go. OT. Hank will have to stand on his head for 3 OTs and then eventually the Habs will collapse and we will score on a breakaway. 🙂

BTW, was listening to the Habs broadcast on radio. Their announcers are stunned a team like the Rangers, much weaker than the Habs as they put Tim are in this one.

    • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

      Put it…not Tim.

      • Rich S says:

This dominant play is why I have been saying all year this is the most talented group of forwards the rangers have ever had…..
AND when hayes and kreider wake up !!!! Miller is trying to do it all alone……he has confidence and I Love it!!!!!

Lindberg and fast are keepers!!!!!!. Big Game players!!!!

I might have to add them to my untouchables list!!!

Still need a physical, leader, veteran center!!!!!

        • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

You are going off the deep end again my friend!

But tonight, after that great win, I think I will cut you some slack. 🙂

I do agree that our depth guys have bailed our butts out. Totally agree on Lindberg and Fast, and particularly love what the latter is doing after all the unwarranted abuse he takes out here.

I agree with the latter on the veteran center…someone who can FINISH on scoring chances. And we need a defensive upgrade or two.

But how about Girardi? Everyone was running him out of town and he’s been real good in this series. Skjei, McDonagh. Terrific. (Gee, I thought AV was abusing and misusing Girardi?).

And I wonder of one of our posters who will remain nameless still think they are choke artists and that they are done?

This team has flaws. I think the forwards are tremendously overrated. But NEVER question their heart and their fortitude.

And Hank….superstar. Anyone still believe we’d be better off with Raanta in there?

We know they can handle adversity. Can they handle success and close it out in Game 6 like they did three years ago?

          • Rich S says:

Raanta in for hank? Crazy talk……….I wont suggest it anymore!
Yup. finisher….and 2 Righty defensemen…..and someone [matt martin/tom wilson type] to pummel shaw for the illegal blindside hit on Lindberg…..
Girardi still cant keep up with quicker guys , but he has played terrific ……Stall lost puck leading to habs 2 nd goal…did not like….
Smith has been great … another keeper…..
Montreal cant keep up. has only few top end players…….paccioetty has been quiet…..
But seriously must find a way to keep lindberg and fast and grabner and smith…..

    • paulronty says:

The Rangers are definitely the better team, when they put their mind to it.

    • Richter1994 says:

Not for nothing, but AV making his “adjustments” now are the line up moves a lot of us have been asking for, for months. Glad the coach can get up to speed.

Maybe I should invite AV to section 215 so I can point these things out to him. He can have a nice view from above.

Yes, even I admit that this is an obnoxious post, lol. 🙂

  53. Leatherneck says:

Holden has been a train wreck

  54. Chris F says:

    Holden. *gulp*

    • DBloomer says:

Holden is dumb in the d zone but he can sure make good tape to tape stretch passes.

  55. paulronty says:

Dump it in chase. Dump it in chase, both teams, all night long. A breakaway wins this one.

  56. Leatherneck says:

That was the best sequence of the game so far from the Rangers, Montreal is starting to look tired

  57. paulronty says:

Oh no, Kreids fans on the shot!!

  58. Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

Kreider! Ugh! Of course he blows it, because he’s not a finisher. So overrated.

Difference between good and great. There it is.

    • paulronty says:

Overrated guy sets up the winning goal!!!!

      • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

Happy to eat crow! But, he did get a little lucky. It was a deflection off a stick or skate that happened to go to Mika. Mika knows how to finish!

So happy for him. Had big skates to fill taking Big Game Brassard’s place!

As I said, when I watch, I’m irrational. Then I calm down. Kreider can stay…for now. 🙂

      • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

So, if I’m going to eat crow on Kreider, how about giving props to AV and the team. They have faced adversity all series (lose a heart breaker in game 2, then down 2-1 in the series, down early and out played in the first period tonight), they hang in and find a way.

Hard to say this team doesnt handle adversity well. It’s handling success that I worry about.

So come on Paul…say something nice about AV and the team’s resiliency. I know you can do it! 🙂

  59. Chris F says:

Missed chances, missed chances, missed chances.

  60. Chris F says:

Big game Zibanejad!!!!!!!! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!

  61. HOF 19 says:

    MIKA…..MIKA…..MIKA…..MIKA…..MIKA…..MIKA…..MIKA…..MIKA…..MIKA..MIKA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  62. Leatherneck says:

Oh my God, they found a way….Let’s Go Rangers!!!!

  63. DBloomer says:

The reunited kreider zib buch line regaining early season form

  64. Chris F says:

My post from earlier today, I’m just gonna leave this here:

“Mika is younger, cheaper, equally talented, equally productive, and better on faceoffs.

Plus, he potted 2 OT winners this season. Yeah, I’m not worried about him not yet being on fire yet through 4 playoff games. He’s gonna be a huge part of this team’s future.”

Did I mention that Mika is the OT guru?

  65. Peter says:

What an amazing overtime period by the Rangers! Thoroughly dominated the Habs. Mika had a terrific game all night and Kreider awoke during OT to set up the winner.

Back to MSG to finish the Habs!

  66. Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

What a great, great win! WOW!!!!

  67. HARLEMBLUES says:

Now go home play hard, tough hockey and close it out. Chris Kreider, played well last game with being reunited Mika and Buch. This game they continued to put pressure on the Canadians D while creating many scoring opportunities. Winning goal scored by Mika made by Kreider. Buchnevich is a star in the making just needs to grow and get stronger. That OT should be how every period the Rangers should play. Don’t give the Habs time or space just come at them in waves line after line. Hail to the King.

  68. HOF 19 says:

Do not need a game 7……So end it in game 6 GREAT GUTSY WIN RANGERS !………I know I don’t have to say enjoy the rest of your nights ALL …..KEEP IT ROLLING RANGERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  69. Dan says:

This blog is something else. You write a piece comparing Mika and Brass, and Mika has his biggest game as a ranger and nets the OT winner. It’s like you knew what was coming!! Love it!!

I realllllllly hope that is the wake up Kreider needed. What a dominant OT by the whole team. I’m so happy with a number of these players playing their hearts out, — Nash, Mac, Lindberg, Fast, Smith, Skej. I’m even loving me some girardi right now. And obviously hank.

The playoffs are something else, i said this after game 1 and I reiterate … I really don’t know how I’m supposed to function as a human during this spring.

  70. Peter says:

Need to mention that the much derided Girardi, although sometimes getting turned around in his own zone, overall had quite a good game, delivering some booming checks, pinching in at the right time and blocking shots. Get a good day’s rest Danny, going to need you again in NY.

  71. Peter says:

Sacrebleu! The Preds swept the Hawks!

    • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

I wonder how many people in the NHL.com pool had a Preds sweep. Incredible. I had the Hawks going all the way. My bracket is busted early!

  72. Leatherneck says:

This had to be one of the most undeserving to deserving wins I have ever seen,,,, 1st 38 mins it was all Montreal…we slowly took over after that…Crazy

  73. y81 says:

Here’s hoping for a Canadiens Game 6 like the one in 2014. I don’t have tickets to this one, alas.

  74. HARLEMBLUES says:

I was listening to the radio while looking at the TV feed. Dave Maloney scream on Mika’s game was priceless. Oh man he sounded like a four year old girl he voice got some high.

    • Stevem says:

That’s Dave.. once a Ranger always a Ranger. Have you ever seen the clip of him being interviewed after we lost the deciding game 5 against the Isles in ’84?… The man was inconsolable.

      • Chris F says:

Where can we listen to this Maloney clip?

        • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

The Dave Maloney clip is at 4:28 in.

Some classic stuff from 1984 NYC TV. Warner Wolf and then Sal Marchiano (who, for some of you of a certain age, maye recall he did Rangers TV for a year I believe in between Tim Ryan and Jim Gordon)

If there was video review back then, does that Don Maloney tying goal get overturned?

Also, take a look at the save by Glen Hanlon on the Tonelli breakaway. Unreal. The game winning goal he let up vs. Morrow in OT was bad, and that’s what we remember. But everyone forgets that Hanlon was mostly brilliant in that series. His game 2 performance was off the charts brilliant. After the winning goal, Billy Smith, who shunned post-game hand shakes, skated to Hanlon and put his arm around him.

I remember minutes before, Mikko Leinonen nearly scored on a glorious chance in front (breakaway maybe?). He scores there, Hanlon has a place similar to JD in Rangers lore, and Mikko would be revered like Stemkowski. That Rangers team was good that year, and it was only the unfair divisional format that had the Rangers play the Islanders in round one. If the Rangers had won that game, I’m convinced they would have found a way to make it to the SCF (where they would have lost to the Oilers).

In the end, the Rangers had a lot of really good players. The Islanders had great players. Great players find a way and win Cups.

          • Stevem says:

I hadn’t forgiven Leinonen yet. Lol. And I think Bob Brooke had the breakaway. 33 years ago seems like yesterday. Back then the rule was stick above the shoulder was no goal.. it was close as can be.. but was a high stick.. thank God for no replay then.. but Alas the seeing eye shot from Morrow with a Pat Flatley screen got by Hanlon. To this day.. like Dave Maloney said in his post game interview, I defy that the Isles were the better team that series.

        • Stevem says:

Chris, check out NY Rangers blog… They have the radio call.

          • Eddie!Eddie!Eddie! says:

I just posted the video link. It’s awaiting moderation. But you can find it on YouTube.

  75. Peter says:

Oscar Lindbergh deserves mention as does Jesper Fast. Both have had an excellent series thus far.

    • Chris F says:

Extremely critical depth pieces. Lindberg soldiers that 4th line, winning faceoffs, forechecking, hitting, and playing an all around sound game. Fast is everywhere, never gives up on a play, and now has two huge goals!

    • HARLEMBLUES says:

      No question.

  76. Stevem says:

Scab fans over at Eyes on the Prize having major meltdowns.. love it.

    • Chris F says:

They’re incessantly apoplectic. Every shift. Every hit. Every penalty. They lose their minds.

  77. Hockey Sittoo says:

That was a flat out dominant performance in OT and for most of the 3rd. Hank kept them in it in the 2nd and the save on Pacioretty’s breakaway looked effortless. Just a great win and I am thrilled for Kreider and Zib! Nash is a force of nature…

  78. King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! King Sieveqvist ! says:

It’s like a scary roller coaster ride watching this team …. Lol … First we’re going downhill out of control , then they settle down and tie it , then back down the hill some 1 minute later they settle down again and tie it … Least they showed up for OT !! …. 13 to go Sittoo

  79. amy says:

let’s put this team away tomorrow night and get some rest boys and get ready for ottawa
