Defenseman Dan Girardi has been nominated as the Rangers’ selection for the Masterton Trophy this year. The Masterton trophy is awarded annually to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey.

Girardi is finally healthy this season after playing most of last year with a fractured kneecap. I can’t help but think that this is more of a career achievement nomination for a lifelong Ranger whose future is uncertain. Once a universal fan favorite, Girardi has seen his play severely decline over the past three seasons. It’s been tough to watch, as we all recognize what he’s done for this organization. I personally hope he wins it.

Five Rangers have won the trophy in the past, with Dominic Moore being the most recent in 2013-2014. Jean Rattelle, Rob Gilbert, Anders Hedberg, and Adam Graves have won it previously.

This is a very nice nod to Dan.

You may well be correct Dave about the career achievement angle as the reason for Girardi’s nomination. As an example, if you look back at why Rod Gilbert won it following the 1975-76 season, it was because he overcame a serious back injury ten years earlier that nearly short-circuited his HOF career. I don’t think it had anything to do with his performance from the season that he won the award.

Eddie, People to not realize how fortunate we were to have the great Rod Gilbert as a HOF Ranger. His back surgery was so complex and severe ( it was done back in the day of let’s roll the dice and see what happens?) Thank God it was successful. Another Ranger Legend who never got to lift a Cup:: 🙁

        No doubt Bobby!

It’s amazing to think how much different the Rangers of the late 60’s/early 70’s would have looked if the Hockey Gods had not smiled favorably on us in terms of injury. Not only did Gilbert have serious back surgery early in his career, but so did Ratelle (might have been a factor as to why he also won it). And Giacomin’s career was also nearly short circuited before it started due to serious burns he suffered in a kitchen accident. But all miraculously came thorough those obstacles and not only played again, but excelled at the highest levels imaginable!

If those three had been less fortunate, that Golden Era that essentially revived Rangers hockey probably doesnt happen. And who knows what would have happened to the franchise!

Girardi got the nomination because E3 wrote the NHL, as he did for the retirement of Rattle’s number !!!!!!!!! LOL, let’s all laugh today……..
