The Rangers have re-signed RFA winger Marek Hrivik to an undisclosed contract. Hrivik has played his North American pro career with the Hartford Wolfpack, putting up a line of 12-21-33 last season. The 23-year-old Slovakian winger will likely spend this season in Hartford again.

Is this guy a prospect, or is he a career AHLer? Hear about him every year it seems, but have never seen him play?

Hrivik is a depth guy. He’s close to aging out of prospect status at 23 but he could be a late-bloomer. Don’t forget he had the second half of his 12-13 season, his first full pro season, wiped out by a nasty concussion. On the plus side, he seems to be on the cusp of making the team every training camp.

At this point, based on his lack of AHL scoring, he looks to be a guy that will be nothing more than a reliable checker at the NHL level that can pot an occasional goal. I imagine the Rangers like keeping him around in case they have to dip down to forward #16 or #17 on the depth chart they know they have a guy they feel comfortable plugging in.

I bet in a lesser organization he would probably have about 20-40 NHL games under his belt by now.

I do NOT know why the Rangers are so high on this guy. I have seem him play in Hartford & he is NOT that good of a player. They should package him with another prospect for a dependable checking forward like Derek Dorsett, Brandon Dubinsky, Scott Hartnell .
