Quickly addressing these Ryan Malone rumors

August 26, 2014, by

In case you missed it, the Rangers blog-o-sphere picked up a story from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune saying the Rangers had been speaking to Ryan Malone. Usually this is something we would post here, but the problem is that the article is from August 21, one day after the Rangers landed Kevin Hayes. The article also explicitly talks in the past tense:

Malone looked good and with his legal issues soon behind him from Tampa, one would think somebody signs him (Rangers have talked to him) or he attends a training camp on a tryout.

All it says is that they’ve spoken to him at some point, likely as a backup if they couldn’t land Hayes. The Rangers now have no use for Malone, especially with Hayes and Lee Stempniak under contract. Plus, Hayes puts them at 50 contracts, so even on a PTO, the club would need to make a trade in order to sign him. I’ll chalk this to outdated

  1. Al says:

Sather has a history of bringing in troubled players on PTO in camp

    • Tim B says:

He brought Nedved in during the Betts era. Remember they were both competing for 4th line? However Nedved wasn’t troubled. Voros was another name

    • Puck Luck @Centerman21 says:

Big deal. I don’t see it happening unless he trades a non-roster contract. They’re at the maximum reserve limit of 50 contracts. I think Sather needs to cut a player as it is. Better to be at 49 in case of trade or injury later in the season. He’s got Stempniak who’s a righty likely on the team just for his shot and forechecking. Glass is on a 3 year deal.

So unless he’s cutting Lombardi Malone rumors were just in case he couldn’t sign Hayes. Although on a PTO it’s never bad to have competition for jobs. I think their may be a few kids they could give up on by now.

  2. Al says:

Sather also signed John Kordic to his last PTO with the AHL oilers

  3. Harlemblues says:

He couldn’t keep his nose clean in TB. New York would be better? Oh his skill level has diminished also.

    Blueshirt Brother Dave:
Whether this is a scribe’s stab at getting a hockey byline in August, or actually valid, I’m kinda’ intrigued.

Malone offers some much needed truculence to our bottom six. Plus, he’s an ex Penguin, a la Tanner Glass. How ’bout some face-wash from an old teammate, Mr Crosby?

  5. Al says:

Hearing NYR have given Ryan Malone a camp invite. Will confirm shortly.

    • Dave says:

Yup, saw that. I’m missing something on this contract thing with Duclair. Trying to confirm what it is. His contract doesn’t slide, but I’ve read it doesn’t count against the 50 contracts, which gives them room for Malone without trading someone (PTO doesn’t take up a spot, but signing him would).

  6. Al says:

Done deal. NYR have officially invited Ryan Malone to training camp.

  7. frank cerbone says:

Don’t need a 6-4 guy who gut TKO’d by 5-9 Sean Avery and has hisotru of substance abuse like Fleury, Tootoo, & Boogard.

  8. frank cerbone says:

Malone a career -48; wonder what his Corsi numbers are like
