Buchnevich cracks ESPN’s Top 100 Prospects

August 12, 2014, by

Pavel Buchnevich (3rd, 2013) was the lone Ranger to crack Corey Pronman’s Top 100 Prospects list for ESPN (Insiders Only) at #25. Buchnevich didn’t have sexy numbers with the KHL this season, but he had the third-best under-19 season in KHL history. He’s an elite talent that held his own in a league that is very difficult to crack as a teenager.

Anthony Duclair (3rd, 2013) was listed as “just missed.” Notably absent is J.T. Miller, but Pronman noted on Twitter that Miller didn’t qualify as a prospect, as he didn’t meet the requirements set.

I don’t understand how Duclair didn’t crack the top 100, and how Skjei was absent as well

  2. Walt says:

The question is, will this kid come to North America to play?????

With the way Putin is acting, he may not let players leave Russia to play in the NHL. I won’t get too excited until he wears a Ranger’s blue jersey!!!!

  3. RangerMom says:

Only 1 prospect in the top 100? Well, crap, that’s depressing. I know it’s only one man’s opinion, but wow, harsh.

  4. WilliamW says:

Buchnevich and Duclair are the highest upside prospects in the organization so no surprise that they show up here in a list which focuses purely on ceilings

Others like Lindberg, Fast, McIlrath and Allen project more as depth players who could be solid NHLers but not all stars

Skeij seems to be in between these groups

Hagelin never showed up on this type of list and he turned out pretty well. I don’t recall McD being in it either

ESPN’s also not exactly leading the way in hockey analysis. They barely acknowledge the sport.

      • Dave says:

Corey Pronman is a big hockey guy, and was with Hockey Prospectus before joining ESPN. His opinion is legit.

ESPN has done a good job of hiring good hockey writers for their online content.
