Friedman: $600k gap on Chris Kreider contract

July 21, 2014, by

Per Elliotte Friedman, there is a $600k gap for the Rangers on a new Chris Kreider contract. Kreider’s initial ask was $2.8 million per year, with the Rangers opening at $1.9 million (since upped to $2.2 million). I initially ballparked Kreider at two-years, $2 million +/- $250k. At this point I’d assume he gets a deal similar to Carl Hagelin ($2.25 million over two years).

Kreider is set to have his arbitration meeting on Wednesday. Per CBA guidelines, both sides must submit their contract terms 48 hours prior to the meeting.

  1. Frank Cerbone says:

Hagelin had 5 game inning goals & one shot handed goal last season

Hagelin is an excellent defensive forward. See PK Subban.

Kreider had ZERO game winning goals & short handed goals

Hagelin played significant time with offensively challenged payers in a checking role.

    Kreider did not.

    Hagelin deserves more than Kreider.

    But will that happen.

  2. Todd says:

    Really Frank?

Although Hagelin had a great playoff run, he has no physical game, will not stand in front of the opposition goal, and played against third line talent.
Not a great comparison comparing a 3rd year player to a rookie.

  3. SalMerc says:

You make discount this, but if Kreider goes to arbitration and wins, I think the NYR are put in a difficult position. They may need to make different decision on Brassard, and/or look to make a trade, that sends someone like Hags away for a pick. The free dollars are just not there.

    • Dave says:

99% of the time, arbitration just takes the middle ground. In this case, it’s $2.5 million.

      • Ray says:

I doubt Kreider gets much more than $2 mil in arbitration – he just hasn’t done that much so far and that’s what the arbitration panel will consider.

  4. mikeyyy says:

Fact is kreider can get 3.5 to 4 on the market. He’s better than brassard. And he’s set to get 3.5 to 4

We should really trade another player to clear up about 5 million in cap.

  5. Bloomer says:

The Rangers will sign Krieder, SuperZuc, John Moore and Brassard, but will use up their cap space to do so. Unless they move a contract (which I doubt) what you see is what you got for training camp. IMO, the Rangers have the best defence in the league and one of the top goalies. Their forwards have some talent, but as it stands not a lot of depth.

  6. Frank Cerbone says:

How long before Staal is gone?

Probably pretty soon if Allen &
J Moore looks good in camp
