Brooks: Rangers will use compliance buyout on Brad Richards

June 15, 2014, by

Per Larry Brooks, the Rangers will use their final compliance buyout on center Brad Richards:

It is a fait accompli that Brad Richards has worn the Blueshirt for the final time. It is only a matter of timing as to when management exercises its final amnesty buyout on the team’s de-facto captain, whose tenure over three years added class and a substantial presence to the organization. Richards will leave the Rangers in a far better place than when he joined them. His contract has paid for itself.

This isn’t really surprising news, as it has been widely speculated that the Rangers will use their final compliance buyout on Richards for over a year. It isn’t a matter of performance or leadership, it’s simply risk management. The cap recapture penalty is far too great for the Rangers to risk keeping Richards around. This isn’t confirmed yet, so anything can happen.

Now the Rangers MUST get bigger and tougher. Also they must get a legitimate heavyweight .there are some young enforcers that are UFA. http://www.capgeek.com/free-agents

More than the cap penalties they may be afraid of. They need the money to resign some players getting substantial raises. There’s also the free agency factor. The Rangers will want in on anything that may help make the team better.

Brad gave us his all, and for that we thank him. Good luck with your career, if anyone will pick him up, or in your retirement!!

Ok one down. One to go. When can we trade Nash?

    • stuart says:

agree totally, next is to trade nash and get another top scorer, or a solid powerplay defenseman. we need to replace richards and nash with two pure goal scorers like carter/hossa/ tyoe caliber players who can and will do whatever it takes to score and win for us. We are still in need of a true offensive captain, someone who brings an all around tough game. and is good on faceoffs, cough cough ryan kesler, for richards and a pure sniper on wing dor nash and or a strong defensman that can play top minutes instead of giradi!!! please fix these holes management. we are so close to winning the cup soon.

Hank displayed his mettle in this series.

He played extraordinarily in Game 4 and Game 5, after the series was all but over.

In the first three games, he was outplayed by the better goaltender.

Unless Hank finds himself on a team like the Kings or Blackhawks, a team on which he is just another player, he will never win the Stanley Cup.

The Rangers have to buy out Richards to give themselves more cap space. When your (can’t win in OT) goalie is making 8.5 million…. cap space is tight. If Stralman is asking for a kings ransom they should let him go too. BTW, Lundqvist is not the best goalie in the world J.Quick is.

    • Pete says:

Quick has the better “team” playing infront of him but to say he is the “best” is arguable at best. The Rangers all season have made a habit of making goalies look better than they really are.Not taking anything from Quick, he was very good, but if you’re basing that on this series then I think you might be seeing it wrong…

If it were not for the incompetent refs, we would be playing game 6 tonight for the cup and the Conn Smythe for Henrik. The Kings are a great team and probably better than the Rangers. They did not need the extra help they received. It’s beginning to look like soccer.
