More Callahan contract rumors

March 3, 2014, by

I hope you’re all ready for a long three days of endless Ryan Callahan rumors. As the trade deadline approaches on Wednesday, we are going to hear endless “Callahan to [insert team here]” rumors, even more “Callahan’s updated demands” rumors, and some ‘Glen Sather ups his offer” rumors. This time around, we have a few new rumors, courtesy of Pierre LeBrun.

LeBrun stated that both sides have moved off their initial demands. The Rangers are holding firm at six years and $36 million, while the Callahan camp has come down to six years and “south of $6.5 million.”  I mentioned on Twitter yesterday that the Girardi term (six years) means the Rangers are going to go to six years for Cally. There’s a deal to be made here, whether or not you agree with the term or dollars.

  1. Mark says:

I hope they get this deal done before the daedline so we don’t have to hear it all year about how they can’t let him get away. Cally will be the Captain of the Rangers for another 6 years at least and he will be the next Adam Graves… A great Ranger that just will not go away. Love him but he is everywhere at the Garden.

I hope the Rangers stay smart and use picks to add a few pieces. I would look at Myers and Erhoff if we need to add to the Blue line…

But ultimately I would try and land Ales Hemsky. It won’t be the sexy aquisition that we all were hoping for, but the guy can score and it will cost you a 3rd. They are asking for a 2nd now but they will deal him before the deadline.

    • Georg says:

Another terrible deal for Rangers-six years for six mil per? Really…? Cally is a great team guy but he will never be worth 6 mil for 40 pts or less per year and he will never play full season, especially 4 or 6 year from now. Rangers would be better of even with draft picks for the future. They did not miss him when he was out this year and they didn’t benefit from his presence in the last three games. Sather should definitely trade him before Wednesday!

    • amy herman says:

i don’t want to see cally go because he is the heart and soul of this team. and a good friend but if there is a deal out there do it if there isn’t resign him

  2. Chris F says:

So the difference here is a 6×6 versus a 6×6.5 contract? Seriously, get it friggin’ done already.

Squabbling over $3 million over a 6-year extension is unbecoming to all involved.

    • Dave says:

6/$37.5m ($6.25m a year) is the middle ground. The deal will happen.

      • Rangers Fan in Boston says:

How do you feel about this? Does this contract make sense as far as what Callahan brings to the team and his fit in AV’s system? Whether it’s market value or not, does it make sense for the Rangers going forward?

Would this contract still allow the team to makes the moves it needs to (extend Staal, Zuccarello, Kreider; bring in another center) to remain a player in the East?

        • The Suit says:

I’m confident that in two-three years from now with an increasing team cap, $6M per for a 2nd liner will be the norm and not an outlier.

          • Chris A says:

Even if Callahan falls down to the third line, he would be replaced on the second line by a young player that is vastly outproducing their cap hit, helping offset Callahan’s bad contract.

      • Chris A says:

Too bad as that’s $750k a year too much for Callahan.

He should look at Girardi’s contract and say, ‘I’ll take that, that’s enough for me’. Watching the last two games and seeing Callahan on the PP in Zucc’s spot game me some awful flashbacks to the past three or four years of PP futility. He just lacks dynamism on the PP. He plants himself on the crease and just stays there. Yeah, he’ll cash in occasionally but most of his shots are those spin shots right into the pads or wide of the post.

Sorry, I’m a little conflicted on Cally right now. Part of me wants to keep the captain around and part of me thinks that he is devolving into nothing more than a grinder and could be a real cap problem in a couple years.

    • Ray says:

The two sides are not equal. Callahan is fighting for 3 million dollars that he does not need. It is about pride really, nothing more. Sather is fighting for 3 million dollars of cap space, money which conceivably could be the difference between a Cup and no cup.

  3. Todd says:

I think Cally comes down off his demands and signs for $6mm @ year. As much as I love him in Ranger Blue, his numbers don’t justify more. Actually I think he is getting a great deal at $6mm.
This team cannot get out of the conference unless Sather signs bigger, gritty forwards.
Look at the way the Flyers and Bruins won with physical play.
Boyle, Haglin, Stephan, Zucc, Cally, Richards, too many small guys or soft guys.

  4. Jeff P says:

6/$37.5 and call it a deal.

  5. Beezy says:

Making a deal for the sake of making a deal is the worst rationale I can possibly think of. What if the deal is bad? Sather absolutely should not do this. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a ploy to make teams more interested in acquiring Callahan at the deadline.

Why should NYR pay a third line winger like a first liner? This rumored contract would preemptively end any chance NYR has to contend in the near future.

    • Gary says:

Great point, now other teams interested in cally will have to sweeten their offer.

  6. paulronty says:

He’s still asking for too much money. 6X6 is absolutely the highest Slats should go but Cally should not get more than Girardi even.

  7. Zen says:

I hope Sather doesn’t cave and forces Cally to to choose money or being a Ranger. $6M is already too much, so that should be enough for him.

  8. Arisrules says:

Vastly overpaying for Callahan if we do 6 for 6.25 a year, I hope Sather balks at that. He’s a very good third line winger, that’s it.

  9. KC says:

  10. fred says:

No Hemsky–his purse wont fit in the locker at MSG…

  11. SalMerc says:

Cally at 6.5 for 6 years or trade him for St. Louis and sign him for 2 more years?

    • Chris A says:

      St. Louis everytime.

Callahan doesn’t produce anywhere near enough to have a cap hit over $5.5M per year

  12. mikeyyy says:

Never thought I’d say this. But. I’ll pass on Callahan for 6@6

5.5 or we trade you to the islanders.
