Obligatory Del Zotto rumor updates

November 27, 2013, by

The more the season progresses, the more the Michael Del Zotto trade rumors swirl. Darren Dreger noted yesterday that the Rangers spoke to Ottawa and that no match could be found. The Rangers wanted either Marc Methot or Chris Neil, and Ottawa countered with Colin Greening, Eric Gryba, or Erik Condra. Those players did not fit with the Rangers. We all know what Chris Neil is, but Methot is a hard hitting defenseman that the Rangers could use. Problem is two-fold: He’s not the swiftest of skaters and he’s a left handed shot.

Dreger also noted this morning (on the radio) that the Rangers were talking to the Leafs as well. Jake Gardiner was the name tossed out by Toronto. In a vacuum a deal like that makes sense, since both might benefit from a change of scenery and Gardiner was teammates in Wisconsin with Derek Stepan and Ryan McDonagh. But again, Gardiner is a left handed shot.

  1. Kevin says:

Wow, that’s a very underwhelming haul for Del Zotto

  2. Nick says:

I would def consider the Gardiner deal, but I would expect Toronto to add a pick

  3. Bloomer says:

I guess I look at MDZ play differently then others. He isn’t afraid of making a long stretch pass or skate the puck out of his end. True sometimes he does turns the puck over, but what ever happened to safe is dead?

For a team that needs to generate offence, they can use MDZ in their lineup and it would not be in their best interest to move him for a plumber like Colin Greening, Eric Gryba, or Erik Condra.

    • Joey says:

I agree, no other defense men on the team looks offensive at all. I think MDZ is in AV dog house like Avery to torts. The hauls the rangers are getting for a solid dman is terrible. Sather if he is going to deal him should package him with someone and get quality back scoring back. This team is filled with defensive minded 3-4 liners.

      • Mark says:

Exactly, They some quality scoring + toughness. I doubt that they will ever get a true QB back there until they get lucky in draft or free up some money for FA.

  4. AD says:

Gardineris a left-handed defenseman, but one who is very comfortable playing the right side if need be. He was McDonagh’s partner at Wisconsin, where he played the right side.

  5. Rangers Fan in Boston says:

Meh. Keep him, unless a team brings a strong offer. With this hypothetical return, he’s more valuable to the Rangers.

  6. Jared says:

Not gonna lie, I hated Neil and those weird teeth in the playoffs the year before last but could learn to love him if he comes to NY… I think we could use another tough hard nose guy to help Dorsett out in the bottom six. That being said, is he worth shopping DZ? Im not sure.

  7. Walt says:

All these trade stories are just that stories. Unless we get back something the team really needs, I believe Slats won’t make a move at this time!!!!

  8. Rob says:

Trading the wrong guy. Trade the cry baby – Lundquist. Have you seen his body language. A suoerstar should NEVER act like that. Since he is unsigned, might as well get a good package of players and picks for the most overrated goalie in the nhl. He rests on the one Olympic medal. And is getting old and losing focus.

    • NYRFAN1019 says:

Are you serious? Get off of a NY Rangers blog if you dont like lundqvist. His body language is part of his compete level and he is far, far from overrated.

  9. Frank Cerbone says:

Wait a couple of months, find out if Rangers resign Stralman, Girardi, & Falk ALL UFA or Moore
    & MDZ both RFA.

Why not put MDZ back on the left side with Falk on the right side? The 1st goal in the Florida game was a wild pass from behind the net by Moore.
Didn’t hear anything from Vigneault about that play.

If MDZ is moved before the end of the season, Vigneault will then move on to picking on Hagelin &JTMiller. Righ now Vigneault’s ageda is MDZ.

Really can’t see Lundquist resigning if worst case Girardi, Stralman, Falk, MDZ, & Moore are all gone…..which is a possibility…..especially with sather in charge.

    • Mark says:

Wont hear to much about Staal and is 2 bad plays today against the Bruins. MDZ would have been benched again.
