Best post-lockout Ranger: Round 1, Henrik Lundqvist (1) vs. Olli Jokinen (16)

Offseason tournament bracket.

As the offseason wears on, us and Matt Josephs of Blue Line Station (Twitter: 11Matt_Josephs8) will be running a tournament for the Best Ranger since the 2005 lockout. The first match in the tournament pits the tournament favorite (Henrik Lundqvist) against the trade deadline acquisition that most people would like to forget, Olli Jokinen. Here’s the matchup:

Henrik Lundqvist (Acquired – 2000 draft, round 7)

Hank is Hank. He’s a five-time Vezina Finalist, he’s won the award once. He’s been the backbone of the team, and the best goalie in the world. Not really much else to say here.

Olli Jokinen (Acquired with Brandon Prust in 2010 for Chris Higgins and Ales Kotalik)

In 26 games as a Ranger, Jokinen put together a line of 4-11-15, and helped the Rangers chase a playoff spot. Ironically enough, the big trade deadline acquisition is now best known for missing this shootout attempt, and causing the Rangers to miss the playoffs for the first and only time since the 2005 lockout. While Jokinen may best be remembered for that shootout attempt, the acquisition wasn’t a complete disaster. Prust came along in that deal, and the Rangers shed themselves of the Kotalik contract. It wasn’t all bad.

So who do you think is the better Ranger, Hank or Jokinen? Vote thumbs up for the higher seed (Hank), or thumbs down for the lower seed (Jokinen). Voting ends at midnight tonight.

  1. Dave says:

This should be a close vote…

  2. Mikeyyy says:

Whoever put a thumbs down against hank should be shot.

    • Dave says:

Apparently two people are getting shot.

    • John says:

Probably Devil fans, who follow this blog because they have nothing like it to explain hockey to them.

      • Mikeyyy says:

Wouldn’t you troll other sites if your best player just did you without the common courtesy to give you a reach around so they can bolt to the khl and your goalies nickname is.

        Uncle Daddy

It always surprises me to see, but SEVENTH. ROUND. PICK. Just goes to show, you never know.

    • blushirts26 says:

It was more about the fear that he wouldn’t come over from Sweden, where he played with his twin brother. Swedish goalies have also historically not fared well in the NHL.

But still, that’s usually more of a 3rd/4th rd type thing. Falling to 205 is insane for someone with even half his talent.

  4. Ryan says:

The vote for Olli came from Brian Boucher.

  5. Chris F says:

So, how does this work? When do you close out the polling? Midnight each day?

  6. ranger17 says:

    HANK

  7. AdamGravesIsTheMan says:

    Denis Potvin voted for Jokinen

  8. Brian says:

It’s tough one, but I think I’m gonna give the edge the Lundqvist. I don’t know, I think he’s been just a LITTLE better since the lockout.

  9. TxRanger says:

nik zherdev should win this whole thing

    • Centerman21 says:

so then Scott Gomez will be runner up. my vote goes to ……..Olli Henrik Lundvist!!!!!

  10. TxRanger says:

why is olli even in this thing? he played for us for like two months if even and blew it in the shootout that cost us a playoff spot that might have sent us to the cup finals they way the playoffs went that year.

  11. Tim B says:

Most of these matchups are no brainers. It would be interesting to see seeds in numerical order 1 & 2. Though alot of good players are out of the first round

    • John says:

Good things take time Timmy, let the game play it’s course, you’ll see what you are looking for.

  12. Ben says:

    hank

  13. Joestradamus says:

My vote went to the man with the least amount of eyebrows. Advantage Olli.

  14. LikeABoss says:

Not to spoil good fun but who is the best player in the world since the 2005 lockout? probably the guy hammering Jokinen right now in this matchup.

Will still be fun to see which runner up he crushes into submission

  15. FlynBrian says:

Really… Is this even a race. The King

  16. george says:

Surprised no Prust is in this.
