Rangers re-sign Mats Zuccarello

March 25, 2013, by

Per several reports, the Rangers have re-signed forward Mats Zuccarello to a one-year contract through the end of the season. Zuccarello will be given a one-way deal, and the organization will reevaluate Zuccarello at the end of the season. The Hobbit adds much-needed scoring depth to the bottom-six, and will hopefully jump-start the third line, which is in desperate need of scoring.

As noted previously, Zuccarello will not need to pass through waivers, as the Rangers submitted a qualifying offer last offseason.

Yay! I’m saying he gets 4 goals and 9 assist, but we make the playoffs.

I wonder what the line combo with him will be.

  2. Pete says:

Can’t hurt. The simply must put more biscuits in the basket, this should help.

  3. SalMerc says:

I called this before. We need some addition by subtraction as well.

  4. Walt says:

Put Pyatt on the 4th, see what MZA can do, what have we got to lose???

  5. Chris F says:

Does this have any implications for Miller or Kreider do you think?

What are the likely line combos? Who sits?

Does this suggest the Jesper Fast deal wont happen?

    • Dave says:

Again, Fast is signed to his ELC already. There’s no deal to be had.

      • Chris F says:

By “deal,” I mean physically bringing him across the Atlantic this season.

        • Walt says:

I read that we are going to bring him here for a short time. He will return to Sweden in April, to get ready for the worlds!!

        • Dave says:

Ah. Well the scouts think he’s ready. Wouldn’t shock me to see him get a game or two at the AHL level before making the deicision to bring him up.

  6. Ray says:

This is a great deal all around. A two year deal was always a mistake for both sides. Neither Sather nor MZA wanted to commit without knowing if Torts would really give him ice time – now we find out first.

  7. Mikeyyy says:

A nail in the tortarella coffin.

You can’t say someone isn’t big enough to play and then have him on your team.

That’s a tough pill to swallow for torts.

    • Dave says:

I don’t quite see how you made that connection.

      • Mikeyyy says:

Easy really. Torts went on record saying little zucc can’t play being small. Right before he stopped playing him and sending him down.

For the gm to sign that player to a one way contract. Well that’s a slap in the face to any coach. Unless that coach isn’t going to be there much longer.

        • VinceR says:

Wasn’t he playing with the big club right this time before the playoffs last year then broke his wrist? Late March? He got hurt, not sent down. Never agreed to another contract because he wasn’t guaranteed a one-way.

          • Mikeyyy says:

Nope. Sent down after he healed. Played a few minutes in an islander game and then fell on the bad side of a tortarella Manic episode

  8. Rob says:

Loved Zucc when he was here last and I’m sure I will again. He brings a much needed facet of play that’s needed on this club, and it’s called VISION. Especially on the bottom two lines. Now If only we can set up the top two lines with at least one player that can CHECK on the top two lines other then Cally.

  9. Doctor Col says:

Can’t say this is a good move, despite what I’ve read. NYR needed someone more dynamic, skillful playmaker. Was never impressed by a guy that made Hank nervous on many an occasion.

I’d love to eat my words though so go for it Zucc!
