Montreal claims Halpern (Update: Stu Bickel on waivers)

March 23, 2013, by

Update: Per Elliotte Friedman, the Rangers have placed Stu Bickel on waivers. If/when he clears, the Rangers will have cleared $1.45 million in cap space in waiving Bickel and Halpern.

Original Post: Per Larry Brooks, the Montreal Canadiens have claimed Jeff Halpern off waivers from the Rangers. Halpern was waived yesterday to make room for Arron Asham’s return to the lineup. Losing Halpern will cost the Rangers in the face off circle, but Halpern’s ice time had seen a sharp decline over the past week or so. Halpern’s Ranger career ends with 30 games on Broadway, an assist, 8 PIMs, and a -5 rating.

Now they have 2 spots open to sign someone , and if Bickel gets pickjed up then they can waive Gilroy and maybe have 4 open spaces to sign 4 more players or make one of them 1 for 3 type player deals .As of now they have 48 players under contract .

    • Dave says:

They needed the flexibility, that’s for sure. I don’t speculate much, but this reeks of something bigger.

I really thought Halpern was a great luck up at the time. Very disappointing

        • Dave says:

I’m very surprised they waived him. There was no way he was going to clear. My thought process is that the Rangers needed to get more flexibility under that contract limit.

    • Tim B says:

Gilroy is placing decently. I wouldnt’t put him on waivers. Id place Hamrilik on waivers. If Lindberg does play for the Rangers and the coachin staff believes he is a full time NHLer, than Boyle could be waived to clear alot more cap space.

Both the sharks and Yotes have players I would take.

  3. TxRanger says:

if bickel clears, is he going to hartford or being released?

    • Dave says:

You can’t release players under this CBA. He’d go to CT or he’d remain with the team (like Voros a few years back).

  4. Pete says:

Changes are a comin’ and rightfully so… Now it’s just a question of minor or major, I hoping for minor now and if that doesnt work than let heads roll in the offseason.

  5. Mark says:

He had to be waived.. you cannot have all these bottom six players not scoring. Might as well put some toughness back in the lineup. Think about this, no Prust, no Rupp, No Bickel, and compare that to last year.. Boyle and Powe need to start contributing some is up and down the boards ad naseum and getting quite boring,

    • Tim B says:

I don’t think Powe will contribute offensively. He was brought in to be a grinder and basically get the top players a couple minutes of rest without giving up any goals. Boyle on the other hand has no excuse. He was a one time 20 goal scorer. He should at least score around 15 or so goals if it were a full season. Boyle needs the monentum he had in the playoffs if you expect to see him score more often.

  6. Rob says:

Well I know I’m gonna get KILLED for this but here it goes lol….GOD This team misses Sean Avery! Think Tort’s would say the same stupid thing he said last year? “We have better players here then Sean Avery now” with this team?
