The NY Rangers prospect system ranking from Corey Pronman will surprise folks, but that’s what adding Gabe Perreault does. The Rangers come in at #15, just above the 50% mark, in Pronman’s rankings this year, and that is definitely a surprise and perhaps a bit of a reach. Pronman’s rankings include anyone under the age of 23, so Alexis Lafreniere and Kaapo Kakko still count, which definitely inflates their ranking as well.
Perreault comes in at #3 in the overall system ranking, behind both Lafreniere and Kakko, respectively. This checks out, since he was a top-15 pick that fell all the way to the Rangers at #23, and was a small coup by the Rangers landing him there. This trio, plus Brennan Othmann, represent the top/middle six talent in the NY Rangers prospect system.
It was surprising to see Zac Jones behind Matthew Robertson, something that doesn’t pass the sniff test. It says a lot that Robertson has never been recalled and didn’t beat out Jones to start last season or Hajek/Harpur when Jones was sent back. This is especially intriguing since he’s the exact type of defenseman that Gerard Gallant loved and wanted on that third pair. Clearly something is amiss. Again, just differing opinions.
Seeing Adam Sykora as a glorified honorable mention seemed off as well, especially when Jaro Chmelar was in the top-10. This is all opinion based and no one will have the perfect answer, but at least the NY Rangers prospect system is more than just one player.
