New NY Rangers head coach rumor: Patrick Roy

A new Rangers head coach rumor has emerged, as Patrick Roy seems to be garnering a lot of attention following his Memorial Cup win with the Quebec Ramparts. Roy’s name had been tossed around a few times, but there couldn’t be anything concrete until the Memorial Cup had finished. Naturally, people like winners and Roy has done a solid job in both of his stints in the QMJHL. However his one NHL stint was pretty horrible.

Roy coached Quebec for 8 seasons before jumping to the NHL with the Colorado Avalanche. The Remparts made the playoffs in all 8 seasons, but could not win the final game of the year. After his stint with Colorado, his Remparts again made the playoffs in all 3 seasons (2019-2020 not included), culminating in the Memorial Cup win last night.

The big question about Roy is whether or not he has learned and adjusted from his horrible run in the NHL. The Avs were bad with solid players, and a lot of it came down to Roy as the coach. There’s nothing official, and this new Rangers head coach rumor is more speculation, but his name hasn’t gone away for a while now. It’s still likely Peter Laviolette or John Hynes, at least for now.
