The Patrick Kane rumors went full wild fire last night, with the Rangers holding out Jake Leschyshyn and Vitali Kravtsov last night for “roster management reasons.” The only thing that made sense was a Kane trade, in which both will play a role. But how can the Rangers fit Kane under the cap?

Luckily, the guys at Puck Pedia put up a video about how this works.

The summary of the two minute video is that the Rangers need to do some maneuvering. They can’t just bank cap space and make the trade on deadline day, since they won’t have enough space. Essentially, the Blueshirts need to waive Leschyshyn to clear more cap space, and let that accrual continue for a few days until there’s enough space to fit Kane.

The Blueshirts held out Leschyshyn because if he got hurt last night, they wouldn’t be able to waive him. So expect Leschyshyn on waivers today, and then expect a trade around deadline day. It’s assumed Kravtsov is included in the Kane deal, but in the event he is not, they would need to trade him before the weekend is out.

There are a lot of moving pieces, but it’s doable.
