NY Rangers interested in Timo Meier from San Jose Sharks

Per Daily Faceoff (Frank Seravalli and Mike McKenna), the NY Rangers have interest in San Jose Sharks winger Timo Meier to augment their top-six at the trade deadline.

Meier is a name we’ve mentioned a bunch (last week’s Patreon post, Patreon post from two weeks ago, in December, earlier in December). He’s a pure shooter, something the Rangers sorely need. The problem with Meier is the acquisition cost, which will be high, and that he’s not a pure rental. As an RFA with a qualifying offer of $10 million, he’d cost more up front to acquire and then the Rangers would need to either trade him at the draft to recoup assets, or find a way to make the salary work. Unfortunately, NHL GMs aren’t as creative as NBA GMs.

Meier checks off a lot of boxes for the Rangers, but the big one he doesn’t check off is cheap. There’s certainly a way to make it work this year, but beyond would take creativity or dumb luck.
