The Rangers dominated the Flyers from start to finish, but the scoreboard won’t show you that with the Rangers winning 1-0 in overtime. This game shouldn’t have been close, let alone scoreless through regulation. The Rangers hit 4 posts, as Carter Hart was fine, but not spectacular, and the Rangers were extremely unlucky throughout. They hit four posts in this game, two of them being the inside of the post with just bad bounces out of the net. They couldn’t buy a goal at all in regulation.

When you can’t buy a goal, then you need to control the game, and the Rangers did just that. There was not a single point in the game last night that the Flyers ever controlled the play. From a team perspective, this is all you can ask for from the Rangers. Thankfully, Chris Kreider got another breakaway after hitting the post shorthanded earlier, and this time he finished.

Individually, Ryan Lindgren, Kaapo Kakko, and Alexis Lafreniere were buzzing all night. This was likely the best game we’ve seen from Kakko and Lafreniere while they were on separate lines, and they earned 3v3 time in overtime, something that is a rare occurrence for them. The rebuild wasn’t going to work if these two didn’t develop, and so far they’ve been proving the doubters wrong.

Rangers 1, Flyers 0

Three on three hockey is a bit of a gimmick, but it’s a fun gimmick. Kreider had looked to change, but stayed on, then he and Mika Zibanejad combined to read a bad Flyers offensive zone stint and turn it into a breakaway. The read was aided by that little nudge by Zibanejad on the third man in.

That’s three in a row for the Rangers, who now have the Bruins up next. Hopefully the Rangers stop hitting posts in that one, since the Bruins are actually good.
