Gustav Rydahl

A bit of a surprise today, as the fourth line battle has one less player with Gustav Rydahl sent down to the AHL today. Rydahl was supposedly in the running for the 4C role with Ryan Carpenter, and it looks like Carpenter has won for now.

Rydahl looked good early in preseason, but it clearly wasn’t enough, at least for now, to stick and break camp with the Rangers. The fact that he didn’t need waivers is also an input here as well. The Rangers need to bank cap space, and carrying less than the maximum of 23 players on the roster is the easiest way to bank that space. Rydahl, not needing waivers, presents a risk free option to send down.

That said, he was good in camp and he’s likely the first man up when an injury happens. He’s their best center option in the AHL right now.

As for the fourth line, it looks like we are going to get some combination of Sammy Blais, Barclay Goodrow, Ryan Carpenter, Dryden Hunt, and Ryan Reaves. One more player will likely be waived from that group if the Rangers are going to be under 23 players for the home opener.
