Is letting Ryan Strome become a free agent such a bad thing?

Per Andy Strickland, Rangers center Ryan Strome is drawing a decent amount of trade interest.

This shouldn’t be much of a surprise, as Strome’s production and career turnaround has been pretty outstanding. He’s a bonafide 2C on a solid contract for next season. Ottawa being involved is certainly nice, and a bit of deja vu. I’m not the only one hoping to relive the Zibanejad/Brassard swap.

The Rangers don’t necessarily need to trade Strome. He’s one of the better bargains in the league right now. However it would be prudent for Chris Drury to explore opportunities now to avoid a long term contract extension. With both him and Mika Zibanejad up next season, they will likely only keep one.

It’s better to trade a player a year too early, rather than a year too late. The trade interest in Ryan Strome isn’t surprising either, so let’s see what comes of this.
