NY Rangers Game 47 Open Thread: Zac Jones’ debut

The Rangers are, for all intents and purposes, out of the playoff picture. They aren’t mathematically eliminated yet, but they need more than a little bit of help. At this point, the Rangers can only afford two losses to close out the season, plus need Boston to stop winning every game they play. Mathematically possible, but so is winning the draft lottery three times in a row.

Jacob Trouba is out tonight, and Zac Jones will make his Rangers debut in his stead. The defense pairs are a mess, and I think the coaching staff galaxy brained this. But the forward lines look good with Alexis Lafreniere and Chris Kreider swapping spots at even strength. Maybe this means Lafreniere will get powerplay time too?

  • Rangers have an inability to play a north south game , yet they continually scratch Gauthier who is one of the few players we have that play north south. I cannot understand playing rooney at this point in the season.

  • I like this Kreider, Kaak and Chytil line. They can cycle, win pucks and got some great scoring chances.

  • Dear David Quinn:

    1) Are you the f’in blind? Or are you just pigheaded?
    2) Put Kravtsov on the 2nd line … Blackwell will not open up space for Panarin and Strome, and
    3) You have a TO for a reason, try using it when your YOUNG team is on the ropes — you risked the Flyers taking over the game in the last 4-5 minutes of the 2nd period.

  • Only one comment I can make which in my view says it all.

Without Panarin, this team is worse than NJ, , Ottawa, Buffalo

  • Ok so another loss time to bring up some of the kids from Hartford to give them a shot. Time to sit Howden Rooney Blackwell..time to get Gauthier back in the line up. Time to end the DQ experiment….Time to get a center man who can actually WIN A FACE OFF. Can we go back in time to redo the Kreider contract. Time to start thinking about next season.

  • Rooney, Howden and Blackwell are not what’s wrong with this club. What’s wrong with the Rangers is their best players are not as good as the other teams best players.

    • Bloomer regarding Rooney Howden and Blackwell and even PDG. My point in sitting them was we know what you got in them let’s see what some of the younger kids look like. Their pretty much out of playoffs so let’s give some ice time and see these kids Barron Ronning Tarmo at the next level. As far as our best players are not as good as the other teams best players Panarin pretty good so is Z so is Fox so is Igor. And in the future Lafy Kakko Kratsov Lundkvist Miller have potential to be great players. I get your thought though – our big boys don’t show up for big games. The Canes playoff series the last Islanders game which had playoff intensity and this game where we need our top guys to step up and nothing. Not sure what is the answer…coach system player mix etc.

      • They’re not calling anybody up beyond injury until Hartford’s season ends, then they can call them up at will the last 6 games when they’re truly out of it. Then it’s all a matter of being under the cap.

Even then, it’s just Barron & Ronning that have earned it.

      • Good points Anthony. Another option in the remaining games, give Chytil a shot with Bread and try out Kravtsov as a pivot.

  • One thing that is becoming very obvious is that a great defensive plan shuts down the Rangers offense. We have seen this before but has JD and JG even noticed? The problem won’t be fixed by adding more feeble, finesse players. The team needs size, muscle and grit not country club types. The team also needs a professional NHL coach that can put it all together. If the Rangers are rebuilding when can we expect to see the results?

    • If you check out the roster stats, the Rangers have plenty of size. What they need is for their young players to learn to use it.

  • Jones was a bunch of meh for the most part, same gameplay as with Tarmo: get the puck off your stick as quick as you can. He played the 2 on 1 against about as good as you can. Takes a while to get into top gear, and that top gear ain’t that fast. He did 19mph at one point when he turned the puck over at the blue line and had to get on his horse. By comparison, Kravtsov can go 2.5mph faster(per KHL stats), fastest guys in the league are 5-6mph faster. Just missed 10 minutes TOI as score state in the 3rd changed things.

  • Game 1 for Jones but nothing jumped off the page size, speed or skill wise for that type of d guy.
Thought he had more points in college too? Wonder what his nhl ceiling looks like

      • First game jitters …. and a coach that staples you to the bench if you’re young and make the tiniest mistake.

        • That wasn’t what happened in the game at all.

Got almost 3 minutes at evens in the 1st with PP2 time, PP time in the 2nd was same as the 1st, his evens time was down slightly because the Rangers were on the PK for 4 minutes. In the 3rd he was within 3 seconds of his 1st period TOI with no PP time because the Rangers had none.

His only short shifts were when he got pulled in zone starts, same thing happened with Reunanen.
