NY Rangers Game 38 Open Thread: Play the kids

The Rangers are back in action at MSG taking on the Penguins in a set of games they must sweep. The Rangers are at a point where to hit 69 points and eclipse Boston’s expected 68 points, they need to go 14-4-1 or 15-4 to close out the series. That means a big winning streak or two is needed, and they need to figure out how to generate some offense.

Meanwhile, the lines certainly drew some attention yesterday and today. Colin Blackwell got the Jesper Fast comparison, which means he’s in the top six. Vitali Kravtsov was moved to the fourth line, and Julien Gauthier was moved to the press box. That sparked some….discussion? Yes, let’s call it discussion. At this point, with the way things are going, playing the kids might be the best choice. The playoffs are highly unlikely, and development matters more.

Let’s see how long these lines last.

  • Listen, this coach is trying to win and get to the playoffs. I fully support this. However, for the rest of you who have no working knowledge of a rebuild, perhaps what you should be hoping for is 4 losses in a row. If that happens, You’ll get your wish and the kids will be playing because they will be eliminated. Perhaps that’s what you want, but me, I want a playoff spot. So go for it Coach Quinn. The kids in this organization have years to hone their skills and that is exactly what they will do

    • I think most of us want both Joe … just that some here think think the kids give us the same chance of winning as some of the marginal vets. Nobody is here calling for the Top 5 to sit or play much less.

  • Rebuild rebuild blah blah so much whining from everyone . Always so dramatic. Kids will get some time, make em earn it like everyone else, none of em are blowing anyone away here yet clearly. Be patient, still years away from being near a contender…. after dumping away our whole team for this ingenious rebuild! Without the luck of Panarin and fox wanting to come here this franchise is basement dwelling for another decade… think about that

    • They are not years away from being a contender. I’ve been on the record since the 2018-2019 season that the 2021-2022 season was going to be their first year of contention.

Will I be right? We shall see.

  • What you want and what is happening are two entirely different things. Frame your argument from the FO POV and you might get somewhere in the next week.

Meanwhile, Rangers clowning a depleted Pens team.

This series coming up against the Isles is make or break, must see TV.

    • We got both tonight. We got a win, and we got the kids playing. I want both, but I’ll prioritize the latter to ensure they hit their contention window with proper development.

      • If you don’t push them in an environment where the competition to get in the lineup with a playoff berth on the line matters; get them past where they thought they could go otherwise, then you don’t get development.

Practice like a champion, then play like you practice.

On the flip side, if they’re thrown in the deep end again and again vs superior talent, you crush development unless they have world class resilience.

It’s a tightrope for sure, but I think they’re getting it better than they have in even the recent past.

  • Gotta say, that move Lindgren pulled with ~17:15 left in the 3 rd was sweet: was getting harried by F1 when lugging up the middle, had the option to pass to the safety valve. Instead spun on his backhand to shake the tail hand carried it out on his lonesome.

Good stuff, big jump in confidence.
