The Rangers have placed defenseman Jack Johnson on waivers, in a relatively unexpected development.

Johnson hasn’t been overly good with the Rangers this year, but he has had a good moment or two. Specifically his goal against the Penguins the other day. When he clears (if), most of Johnson’s $1.15 million salary will come off the books. I believe the cap hit will be around $75k.

The Rangers have been making shrewd cap moves with the taxi squad all season, and waiving Johnson allows them to move him to and from the taxi squad for more savings. With Vitali Kravtsov joining the roster soon, the cap space is needed.

It’s unlikely Jack Johnson is claimed off waivers. This is most likely just a cap move.
