NY Rangers Game 14 Open Thread: Bruised Blueshirts

What an interesting situation for both the Rangers and Devils tonight. The Rangers are without half their lineup. They have mostly kids playing up front and AHLers on defense. The Devils haven’t played or even practiced in a week due to COVID protocol. This could be a track meet. Or it could be the most boring game to ever watch. In all fairness, I don’t think there will be an in between.

David Quinn shuffled the lines a bit in hopes of having more scoring balance while dealing with the injuries. Colin Blackwell jumps to the top line, while Pavel Buchnevich, arguably the best Rangers skater this season thus far, is moved to the third line to help jump start that trio. Brendan Smith is back, replacing K’Andre Miller, who is also hurt.

  • Season is fast turning into a forgettable one – between injuries, COVID, game rescheduling, no fans, a disappointing start for LaFreniere and Kakko, Zibby not playing like Zibby a short season and nightly 2 or 3 point games Its time to focus on the basics and forget the “playoff goal” not happening barring a miracle. If DQ can’t rally this team and they continue to fail – we just might see a coaching change once the Rangers are eliminated from contention. Kind of a downer – we all had high hopes – some higher than others but I don’t think anyone here thought it would be this bad this quick. We all wrote off the Carolina series as a fluke, it wasn’t, it exposed a team that does not know (yet) how to grind out games and stay patient. This season was playoff hockey from the get go – not a coincidence again we cant score – who here thought the offense and not defense would be our biggest concern this season?

    • Kakko has been playing well–he seems much improved from last season and he just turned 20 a few days ago. LaFreniere is 19 years old. I don’t think that anyone with any sense thought that he was going to burst forth like Connor McDavid or Auston Matthews. He will be fine. He’s big and strong and skilled. Just needs to get his game adjusted to the pace and grind of the NHL. Patience is going to be required on the kids Hawk.

The results are not there because they are not scoring, but there are improvements to be seen. Defense has usually been much better. Igor has not been consistent in goal but he certainly has not been bad. Zibanejad will come around. COVID recovery seems to take a while. Panarin will start to play better. Of the young vets, Buchnevich has become the player everyone thought he could be.

I believe next season is the break out. We’ve been waiting a while for it, but with the aforementioned youngsters and K’Andre Miller, Fox and Lindgren, they will make noise in the coming season.

  • Totally being outplayed by a team that hasn’t played in weeks…Pretty damning on the coach…..

  • Yea, let’s get rid of Libor, he sucks! Quinn can’t develop, he has to go too. Gorton? Isn’t that the guy who drafted Kakko? You’re fired! Lol
So silly you guys and gals (Becky) are!

    • The never ending pissing and moaning about a coach without even positing a theory of why he “sucks” is as tiring as complaining about the weather.

      • The team continues to play East – West when they should be playing North – South and driving to the net

He constantly juggles his line combinations instead of keeping players together – chemistry with young players doesn’t happen overnight

He has two of the highest rated draft picks in the last few years “NHL Ready” How are they doing under his guidance?
The Power Play stands around – teams just cover Rangers point men and they shut it down

The Rangers always seem to start slow – often giving up an early goal because they don’t seem ready to play

I could keep going but hopefully you are getting the point about DQ … Sorry but If the talents there but the players continually fail – you have to look at the Coaching staff

  • Colin Blackwell is looking to be a great replacement for Jesper Fast: The utility forward who can move up or down the lineup at the coach’s discretion, which is an asset in today’s NHL

    • I agree pal. It’s over. They were totally outplayed by a team that hasn’t played a game in two weeks.

      • Remember that DQ did not want to coach in nyc, and was asked several times before he accepted position. DQ looked like a coach that is begging to be let go..and it will happen because you can’t fire the team.
