The NY Rangers currently have a second 1st round selection in the 2020 NHL Draft that will be in the 21-24 range. There are a lot of good targets for the Rangers in that range. None will be Alexis Lafreniere, but the Rangers will land talent given the depth of the draft. The scouting report on Jan Mysak is shows he’d be a good fit for the Rangers at that spot.

Scouting Report and Production
Mysak divides a lot of folks, as his play in the Czech Republic didn’t produce anything to write home about (5-4-9 in 26 games). However once he transferred to the OHL, his points exploded with a line of 15-10-25 in 22 games. There’s more to his numbers than just the numbers.
Mysak plays a smart game, with a quick release and good skating with elite top speed. He’s a goal scorer with great hands, something that is tough to come by. He plays in all three zones. He plays on special teams. Mysak is just overall solid across the board.
From the highlights, you see his ability to get in front of the net for deflections. He’s actually a very good net front presence, something the Rangers could use. His ability to get to the front of the net shows off his strength on his skates. He uses that strength to also shield the puck from defenders in the offensive zone.
He also uses his instincts and quick first step to create turnovers and start a rush the other way. Throw in his quick hands, and he becomes very dangerous off the rush. This is a kid who plays the game the right way.
Concerns
One of the concerns is that he may not generate offense on his own, and could pan out to be more of a complementary player than a primary driver. This should sound familiar, as David Quinn has said the same about Lias Andersson and the lack of continuing offensive pressure. He also hasn’t performed well on the international stage. Concerns like these are common for players outside of the top-five, but Mysak’s raw tools should mitigate some of this risk.
Mysak also has a bit of an acceleration problem with his skating. He takes a while to get to his top speed, which is still up there. That just needs some fine tuning, and an NHL team will certainly invest in a Barb Underhill type to work with him on that.
Per most scouting reports, there’s a solid chance Jan Mysak will be on the board for the Rangers at the 21-24 range. He will likely perform better this coming season in the OHL with sexier offensive numbers. All eyes will be on how he performs on the international stage though. A better showing at the World Juniors will go a long way to improving his stock. He’s got a high ceiling, which is what you want at this point in the draft.
