We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men and women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must – at that moment – become the center of the universe. – Elie Wiesel

Here we are, again, writing about the NHL and their lack of action. Months after the NHL did the bare minimum following the killing of George Floyd, barely weeks after only Matt Dumba raised his fist and some of Vegas and Dallas knelt during the National Anthem, we are here again. Talking about how the NHL continues to miss the mark.

Jacob Blake was shot seven times in the back for trying to break up a fight. Seven times. The video shows absolutely no reason to draw a weapon. This was attempted murder. Another in a long line of police brutality against people of color. This has to stop.

In response, the NBA cancelled their playoff games tonight. The Milwaukee Brewers have refused to take the field against the Cincinnati Reds, standing with the Bucks who led this. The WNBA cancelled their games tonight. What will the NHL do?

The NHL will hold “a moment of reflection.”

A moment of reflection. Less than 12 hours after Logan Couture trended on Twitter for all the wrong reasons. Less than three months after no concrete action taken after Floyd’s murder. Barely three months after Akim Aliu spoke out and shared his horrific experiences within hockey culture.

The NHL can do better. They must do better. The NHL’s favorite phrase is that “hockey is for everyone.” Hockey is not for everyone. Aliu opened everyone to the systemic racism within the game. Yet nothing was done. Spare me the arguments that hockey wasn’t playing then.

The league could have done something then. The could have done something now. Instead they hang their hats on what? A 30 second moment of silence whenever something like this happens?

It’s time for the NHL to do something tangible. It’s time for the NHL to take an actual stand against racism and bigotry. Hockey culture is toxic, and inaction only encourages more toxicity.

It is easier to fall for anything than to stand for something.

What is it going to take for this league to stand for something? When will the NHL stop doing what is easy, and start doing what is right?
