Rangers players slowly trickling in for optional skates as Phase 2 begins

Six players skated yesterday, more to start today

As Phase 2 for the NHL’s relaunch plan begins, the NY Rangers are slowly starting to trickle in to skate. As expected, it’s mostly guys who stayed local during the COVID-19 quarantine that are showing up. Yesterday the group was Chris Kreider, Marc Staal, Brendan Lemieux, Brendan Smith, Adam Fox, and Phil Di Giuseppe. Igor Shesterkin also began his training down in Florida.

Today it looks like Artemi Panarin headlines the group that will arrive at the training facility. It is expected more players will be joining him, assuming their COVID-19 tests come back negative. That’s the key here: Any person that enters the facility must be COVID-19 negative.

Players that returned home overseas are not expected to arrive any time soon. Henrik Lundqvist is one of those who returned to Sweden, so he won’t be on New York ice any time soon. The good news for him is that Sweden never shut down, so he’s been able to train.

  • It’s going to be interesting as to how they go about all this.

Part of me feels like, by doing this, that they are messing up 2 hockey seasons.

    • I agree Tony and I would assume, the owners and players will have to agree upon expanding the roster to accommodate the quick turn-around.

    • Yes! I’m intrigued by the playoff format and to see how this all plays out. But at the same time, it feels like they may as well just wait. By the time they get going, it’s going to be like 4 weeks away from when regular training camps would open anyway, and then this whole thing is gonna trample all over next season as well…

  • Summer’s here and the time is right for dancing in the streets….. and hockey !
Glad I didn’t have Traverse City reservations for this year

  • AI think a late start for next season is part of the plan. A better chance they’ll be able to fill the stands. Doubt we’ll be doing that by the fall, especially at MSG
