NHL suspends 2020 Draft and other activities

Uncertainty surrounding coronavirus leads to suspended activities

The next domino has fallen. The NHL has suspended the 2020 NHL Draft, draft combine, and other scouting activities that would have led to the draft.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, as there were talks of the season extending into July, if this season ever gets back underway. If the season were to be extended into July, then naturally the draft couldn’t happen until after.

We are in this for the long haul, folks.

  • This is nothing that we all didn’t expect, but they really still could have a draft remotely on some sort of conference call. They can have phone lines in each city’s home office open for communications, keep the staff down to the minimum, and have the draft just the same. That’s wishful thinking on my part, but what they are doing is probably spot on!!!!!!!!!!

    • Problem is, Walt the NHL would like to get this season and playoffs in. You cannot have a draft without knowing draft positions which are determined by play.
      Hope you are well!

      • Joe

Honestly, do you see the NHL start up again? I don’t see it happening, so why not hold the draft based on position of teams in the standings when the shut down took place? Just a thought……….

We are fine, hope the same is with you, and your family Joe!!!!!

      • Draft order can be collectively bargained over, as can the end of league year, salary cap, you name it.

The hinky part is that under the current CBA, the PA has to drastically adjust their upfront escrow number to make sure the 50/50 percentage of revenue trues up(their term)over the life of the deal.
The current situation blows a hole in the side of that number as playoff HRR adds so much to the total.

Brooksy is talking about doing a new CBA and using the next US TV deal as a smoothing mechanism to fix the escrow issue…it’s doable, but if I’m a younger player I’d be pissed about it.

  • I know that everyone connected with, or a fan of, professional hockey would love to see the 2019/20 season finish with the playoffs and a Cup winner, but, seriously, I doubt that’s going to happen. March is already gone, and there’s little hope that anything will happen in April. I suppose if all goes well (and god knows that I hope it does, for more reasons than just my love of hockey), play of some sort could resume in June, so a playoff series of some kind could get crammed in there. But, then there are complications arising from arena availability, scheduling conflicts, etc. All we can do is keep our fingers crossed, and hope that all of us, and our families, as well as the players and their families, and everyone else, come through this whole, and healthy.

  • Bettman announcement: “The NHL draft is postponed and the Rangers will forfeit all their picks this draft because they are to blame for the coronavirus. No questions please.”

  • Personally I believe they could have played the games — not at arenas but at rinks with a very limited number of people (who have all been tested of course). Games could still be televised and I would venture the guess they would have higher viewership numbers than normal since going out isn’t really an option. This would have to be better than not playing at all.

Plus like Walt suggested, the draft could easily be held remotely. They’re not playing games or holding the draft with fans, that’s out of the question.
