Rangers recall Igor Shesterkin

Rangers to ride three goalies for the time being

The NY Rangers have recalled goalie Igor Shesterkin from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL. The first year North American pro has been absolutely stellar in Hartford, sporing a 1.93 GAA and a .932 SV%, earning himself All Star honors. His 15-4-3 record has helped propel Hartford to the top of the Atlantic Division.

For now, the Rangers will carry three goaltenders: Shesterkin, Alex Georgiev, and Henrik Lundqvist. I am going to question the timing on this, as the Rangers have just four games coming up before nine days off for the All Star break. Shesterkin will definitely get a start in these four games. I looked at the wrong week. The Rangers have seven games. My guess is Shesterkin gets a few starts and the Rangers shuttle him back and forth for weekend games in Hartford.

My mind immediately went to “Georgiev is going to get traded,” but this could just be a simple injury/illness replacement. Doesn’t matter, they wouldn’t recall Shesterkin without any plans to start him in a game or two.

  • It can’t hurt! He’s earned a call-up with his play this season. No matter what the future ramifications are, it will be good to get a look at him. I only hope he doesn’t get too disillusioned after seeing the caliber of defense his new team will be playing in front of him.

  • Georgiev is definitely getting traded as Hank is going nowhere. Shesty is the next “King”. Georgiev should bring a couple of 2nd rounders and if the upcoming draft is as deep as some say then it helps the rebuild. Kreider and Strome will also bring some high picks. Hopefully the men at the top use them wisely.

    • Since everyone is now jumping on the Czar bandwagon I wanted to protect the literary integrity of the process by pouting out that the whole “Czar” thing was introduced by Swarty on 11/25/19 as noted below.

And while Swarty left the blog in December, he has decided that he is not going to let the stupidity and ignorance of Moe, Larry, Curly, Forrest, Schultz or Dooley get under his skin and will return as his alter-ego “Igor the Czar” to commemorate the official commencement of the throne succession ceremonies.

So a little humor here so hold off on the thumbs.

If Hank is the King and Igor, who is Russian, is next in line for the throne then he should be known as “The Czar”

      You heard it here first….

  • I stand corrected. The Tsar – very true. If he’s as good as Hank we have a great starting point going forward.

  • Thoughts:

    1. dont see how georgiev is still on the roster beyond the deadline.

    2. Is this one of those passive aggressive team wakeup calls? Or was this the plan all along – this is game 42 on the button.

    3. If the tandem of hank/georgiev resulted in a .500 team there is little to lose in breaking in the heir apparent now.
