Rangers break into new practice groups, signaling potential opening night roster

With the roster down to 36 players, the Rangers have trimmed their practice squads from three to two, with each having three forward lines, three defense pairs, and two goalies.

Reading from left to right, Team B appears to be the top-nine forwards and top-six defensemen projected for opening night, plus Henrik Lundqvist and Alex Georgiev. Team A appears to be the fourth line and the fight for the final roster spots.

There are a few key things to take away from this, and we will go into much more detail in a later post:

    1. Makes perfect sense. Either Kraftsov goes to the AHL on their first line or he and McKegg are the 21st and 22nd forwards. Brendan Smith might replace one of them for the first 10 days of the season. No real surprises here

  1. Seems about right but I think Kravtsov is where he is because he won’t play in the next game. TBH I think Kravs has shown best of the under 20 set, every game he continues to progress — including last night when he had to play on his off-wing.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see that 6th line play tomorrow and then in the last game work in the 4th and 5th lines (or at least some of them). 6th line will probably get cut on Friday … along with a few of the D like Robertson, etc.
