The second buyout window has come and gone, and the Rangers have not made any moves to buyout a player from their roster. That means all of Marc Staal, Kevin Shattenkirk, and Brendan Smith have avoided a buyout. That does not, however, mean they have avoided a trade.

I stand by my assessment that the Rangers have a trade brewing, or else they wouldn’t have announced the Pavel Buchnevich signing. One trade of either Chris Kreider or Vlad Namestnikov, along with burying Brendan Smith and Matt Beleskey, should be enough to at least get them under the cap. It’s not enough to account for bonus overages, though.

Obviously something else is pending. Just waiting for that shoe to drop.
